Tyra Takes On Weight Watchers – Oprah Can Eat Bread…..

So I haven’t posted about Weight Watchers only because …. well partly because I didn’t want to and secondly nothing has really changed…. weight stayed the same…. lost some weight, gained some weight back… pretty much my cycle  since on the Devil’s Tick Tacks…. weight is still higher than I would like… but you know what… that’s okay…

Good news is since the last time I’ve done a TTOWW I’ve tapered down to a lower dosage of Prednisone, and the less steroids I take on a daily basis the better things are for me in the long run..

So last week I didn’t;t  attend a Weight Watcher meeting, which is odd because I usually go every week, there were a lot of contributing factors…. I have recently taken up knitting. and I was deep in a project, the day before I spent all day at a 10 and 12 year old roller skating party (and I only feel super old, and super weak, when I am around children with an abundance of energy.) and was dead tired, and when you spend a lot of time around  small children (whom I lovingly y refer to as germ magnet a girl with a compromised immune system (ME!) is bound to catch something nasty. So I spent Sunday laying in bed, feeling like death was near while my cat sat on my head while I struggled to breathe,

And because I tend to “slide” when I don’t feel well… I sought out foods that used to hit me in my happy place thinking they would make me feel better….. things like corn dogs, ice bream, chips….. chocolate.. anything that I could grab… and while I was eating these dangerously delicious foods I realized Sunday and Monday had passed and I had not tracked one single thing…. somehow I made the decision that this was how my entire week was gonna go….. so I didn’t track on single thing.

By Wednesday I started to feel guilty…because I track religiously… and I knew this was out of the ordinary… I felt like a kid who had a tiny little taste of freedom…. I didn’t know how to act…. so naturally I ate more junk…. and I ate bread!

Which leads me to the title of the blog. Sandwich bread, I can take it or leave it, I don’t normally eat it because  one of two things will happen, I sit it out and it will get moldy or I put it in the freezer, forget that its there and several months later when digging in my freezer I find something that resembles a wheat brick. But beautifully baked bread. (PANERA) is the Devil’s Playground for. Let’s just say there were two French bread loaves, I took one home, it was demolished within 8 hours of entering my house.

I cute the bread in tiny cute portions, one or two pieces would have satisfied a normal person, but damn it I have no self control, I wasn’t tracking, and it was a carb free for all…. did I mention that I actually woke up out of a dead sleep to eat bread…I’m not sure if that’s hilarious or seriously sad….

And like divine intervention Oprah appeared….over and over again…. I don’t know what it is, but I have seen that commercial more in a week than I have seen any Weight Watchers commercial in my entire life.

Shut It, Oprah!!

So after watching that commercial here are things that I know… Oprah has lost 26 pounds! And she can have bread everyday…. yeah the problem was that she probably has self control (more likely someone preparing her meals and gives her a 24 grain roll) and I have no and ate a freakin’ loaf….. okay I get it!!! I can not have bread in the house…

So Saturday rolls around and before I go to bed I have decided in my head that I am not going to a meeting on Sunday … once again divine intervention happened. I dreamt of my former Weight Watchers leader Leslie. who is currently living the life in Madrid. anyway we were sitting and talking after a meeting, not about weight loss just about life and how sometimes it gets in the way of things you really want to do….. I didn’t think anything of it, seemed totally real to me… then at 6:15 my feline alarm clock woke me up demanding to be fed (naturally she followed me while I filled her bowl, ate a few kibbles then got back into bed and stared at me). Sometimes Tsuki has the ability to give me the most fantastic bitch face… some combined with my Oprah revelation, a dream of my former Weight Watchers leader Leslie, and Tsuki’s bitch face I knew I had to go to a meeting.

Apparently a lot happens when you miss a week, there were so many new people at the meeting…..so many people decided that they wanted to change their lives and lead a healthier lifestyle (wow, I should like a commercial). Naturally I talked about my struggles, what brought me back, and I listened to other people and their struggles, and how they are working through them I say this all the time, but for me that’s the beauty of Weight Watchers, I can go to a meetings and know that I’m not the only one…. I’m not the person still trying to figure out how to handle this.  And this week more than anything reminded me that I NEED to go to meetings, they help keep me grounded.

Since I have to weigh-in next week . I’m doing all the things that I need to do, I’m tracking EVERYTHING, I’m drinking water, trying to get enough sleep, and (UGH!!!) I guess I can go to the gym a few days this week (no promises.. since I still feel like crud).

And if noting else, I gotta get my crap together…. I’m trying to me cute this summer!!

Tyra Takes On Weight Watchers: Ugh, What The Heck?

So last week I finally made Lifetime status, which was expected…. I also gain weight, and that was expected as well.. but what I didn’t expect was the nearly 5 pound weight gain…. ugh, what the heck? In all fairness sugar was my best friend that week and I didn’t work out… but 5 pounds!!! I was on my period and I’m pretty sure I didn’t take a water pill that day…. but I guess this is where I should say I really see the how the physical aspect of weight loss works….the week after I made lifetime I didn’t weigh in.. they say once a month is the least you can do and frankly I think that’s better for my psyche.

Last week I decided that I was going to do some meal planning, what started out as making salads for lunch turned into an entire week of lunches and dinners, breakfast I had to make the day of…. S20160116_171728o last20160116_175239 week I had salad with shrimp, salad with chicken and salad with tuna, chili and turkey sausage with collard greens from lunch (the last two were left overs) For dinner I had shrimp, quinoa and mixed veggies for dinner (for 3 days), oxtail soup (leftovers) and Friday I had dinner with my parents which was awesome Jamaican food (I had Jerk catfish, cabbage and peas and rice…yum!!).

So I made quinoa for the first time last week. I always wanted to try it…. but was a little freaked about cooking it… thank goodness you can make it in the rice cooker. I used a little chicken broth and it was REALLY good, and cooked to perfection. and it was really good with the shrimp and veggies, and it was pretty low in Points .

This week the meal planning is gonna have to be put on whole, I’m dealing with some major GERD issues, and at this point drinking water gives me serious heartburn. So I’m trying to avoid the foods that trigger reflux… and I’m pretty much gonna be eating bland, so that’s gonna take a little bit more time for me to plan out…. so it’s better that I simply cook day to day this week depending on how bad my GERD is….. also I’m gonna try a different medicine and hopefully that will work….. cause this sucks….

It’s even gotten to the point where I can hardly taste my food salty, sweet, sour….. it all taste the same to me…. and you would think that would make me not want to eat…. nope I tried to eat everything that I could because I wanted to taste something…. anything…

Although  I didn’t go to the gym I am happy to say that I am keeping up with my FitBit Challenges, both the Weekend Warrior and the Workweek Hustle…. some of these people are no joke, and for the first time (well the second time in a row I’m in the top 10!! And I even got out and walked in the cold and the snow a few times…I still find walking outside…even when its freezing cold more enjoyable then going to the gym.

2016-01-24 19.56.30

Then this happened…. Guess I got what I wanted I wanted the accountability and Weight Watchers noticed

And as I said that in my head I devised a plan that I would weigh myself at home (wait what?) and monitor my weight on my non weigh-in weeks…  and last week was a gain, this week was a loss! I know that there is a maybe 2-3 pound difference between my scale and the Weight Watchers scale, and I played with my head if I should weigh in this week., I knew I had loss some weight, but by the time I got to my meeting this morning I had talked myself out of it.. because I weighted myself this morning in only my underwear, so I was unsure how much weight my clothes would add on, and if my clothes were too heavy I didn’t want to pay the 15 buck penalty….. so in the end I just sat down and simply went to a meeting…..

It occurred to me that although my new Weight Watchers status is really nothing but a new title, everything is still the same, EVERYTHING. I wake up with the same challenges, and sometimes I de really awesome, and other times I fail miserably, there is some comfort in knowing that every day is a new day and a new opportunity to make better choices

This week Facebook reminded me that it’s been a whole year since I’ve been on Prednisone so to “celebrate” the occasion of one year on the Devils Tic Tacs. I present my fat, prednisone face.

Tyra Takes On Weight Watchers: Oprah, Getting Talked Off the Ledge, Smart Points and Surviving It All

OPRAH:  A few weeks ago, anyone who follows weight watchers was pretty tired of hearing about “The Biggest Change in Weight Watchers History”…..  only a few weeks before that we heard how Oprah had brought stock in Weight Watchers… it all made sense…. that’s why Gail joined! Listen I’m the first to tell you I’m not a fan of Oprah, I don’t drink her kool-aid and honestly I don’t think she can tell me how I should be living my best life. (Yes, she can afford to live her best life, she has millions can afford a 200 cashmere sweater while she lounges on her farm in Indiana or her mansion in California, while average Tyra is robbing Peter to pay Paul just to insure that she doesn’t go in the red with her bank account….I might be slightly bitter) 293519LOGO

GETTING TALKED OFF THE LEDGE: The day that the “Beyond the Scale” program starts was really the day that I decided this is it… I am done. My weight was creeping up every single week. I walked into that meeting weighting more than I did when I walked into Weight Watchers a week ago…. I was over the whole process and was seriously over wasting my money on a program that was not longer working for me. That day Noreen was there, Noreen (whom I mentioned before on this blog) has really been a lifeline to me even when I didn’t realize that I needed them.. I walked into Weight Watchers the week before I handed in my letter from doctor the receptionist who I will call her Vera said, “You sure you want to do this, it’s like cheating” looked at my letter, put a “note” in my file. So I’m standing there asking her “what’s next” and response was, “nothing different has happened now we know that your doctor wants you to maintain your current weight” and that was it;  now let me say that I have been very honest about my struggles and she knew I was on prednisone and she was well aware of why I had the letter…. so my feelings were hurt that she said that and honestly she wasn’t really acting in the “spirit of Weight Watchers” and it it took all of my energy not to curse her ass out. …. so fast forward back to the week that Beyond The Scale started after my experience the week before I honestly gave zero fucks..Noreen pulled me back from the ledge. We talked for 20 minutes about how frustrated I was and how after last week I decided that I was done. She wanted to see the letter, which I still had in my purse, she read it, looked at me and said, “this is exactly what we need, now let’s take a look at the note”  Vera in fact put a note in the computer but she didn’t actually put me in maintenance like she was supposed to. So Noreen, my WW Leader Cheryl and I came up with a maintance plan… I decided I can give myself 6 more weeks and if I still felt the same way I would quit. What I learned is that I need to have 1 point person…. Vera ain’t it, I don’t know what her problem is, she’s been a leader for a long time, but this is the second time that she’s said something made me give her a second look, the first time she said something that I felt was really odd was in the beginning of my WW journey, I told mentioned I would add 7 extra point to my daily points and she told me that the weekly 49 were not to be touched at all, they were there for emergencies…. Emergencies? Like what. I half a pint of ice cream fell in my mouth emergency? I went to to another leader for clarification…. I needed to know.  And of course, she told me that was absolutely not true I could use them as I saw fit. I don’t mean to make Vera sound like a bad person, but it’s clear she’s not MY person. That was also the day that I learned about the new program.

SMART POINTS: I don’t like change, I have mentioned that a lot on this blog, it’s hard for me to adapt to  new stuff, I was at the point in my Weight Watcher journey were I had nothing to lose… maybe this change was what I needed. It’s funny how the changes were things that either I desperately needed to change or things that I had complained about in my meetings. Now Sugar and Fat are heavily factored into points. Fitness for fitness sake . I will freely admit that those Fit Points were my safety net. I would use those after I had plowed through my weekly 49. Focusing more on your and the journey instead of the number…..Now while all of this was going on I was doing my best walking (which I loved) and doing my best to counteract the Prednisone, but then I busted my knee, the official diagnosis was fractured patella… I had to have blood drained from behind my knee and I was wearing a stabilizer was on crutches, it was a mess… which meant for weeks I was unable to do anything, so the weight crept up and my mood went down. My knee is a lot better now, but there is still a huge knot on my knee and I can’t be on my knee for any length of time (it feels like I’m kneeling on a rock

Looking back now, I think I went through the stages of grief….. I have now moved on to acceptance, the program is not easy, it’s a bitter pill for me to swallow. It’s hard sometimes to accept the fact that the caramel macchiato that I had this morning was 18 points….. 18 Smart Points…. What in the actually fuck is that? I mean seriously that like two meals…. but you know what I drunk it, I enjoyed it, and I realize that it wasn’t worth it, so I’m going back to my black coffee with equal and sugar free creamer which is only 1 Smart Point. So I guess that’s the beauty of the program.. make better, smarter choices…

SURVIVING IT ALL: There was a lot of fear going on maintance, every week I was gaining weight. I wasn’t sure if even doing that was a good idea. there comes a point where you just have to walk the path and let it take you were ever it goes (and for a control freak like me.. that’s hard…) As this entry goes live on Sunday I will be at my regular Weight Watchers meeting and would have officially completed my 6 weeks maintance and will me a Life Time Member (which is a whole can of beans) This is certainly not how I wanted to get to Life Time, but my journey has not been the typical one, and it will never be, Life Time will bring a while new level of challenges that I have to take one week at a time. I am roughly 6 pound lighter than my official maintance weight, my weight goes up an down every week…..depending on what I’ve eaten and done, I’m expecting a gain this week, between being premenstrual and having horrible case of prednisone rage/hunger I’m hoping it’s not a huge one….. but we shall see.

Tomorrow isn’t the end of anything, it’s just the continuation. And as many times as I’ve said I wanted to quit I am super grateful to Weight Watchers, I have meet so many people who have let me in and shared their lives with me, I’ve met friends, I got to that meeting every week and know it’s a safe place where I can say things to people who understand and not judge me, I can tell them how I woke up from a dead sleep at 2am had a bowl of ice cream and went to bed, and not feel like I’m being judged and have someone understand or have a similar story. It makes me not feel alone. Losing weight is hard, we all know that, that’s why so many people quit, It’s better when you have someone in the journey with you.

I have to remind myself how awesome I am. I have to remind myself that it’s okay to toot my own horn. I have failed so many times at this weight loss thing. It’s amazing despite all the crap I’ve gone through that I’m still doing it. I no longer want to be average….

Tyra Takes On Weight Watchers: Prednisone Sucks

This past week I have really been in reflection about my weight loss. I had to come to some hard conclusion about my current situation and my weight loss goals, my plan was to talk to my WW Leader about going into a sort of  faux maintenance until I was weened off Prednisone, for the first time I had to say out loud that at this moment in my life weight loss in NOT my main priority.

I went on to the monthly 5K that my local Weight Watchers sponsors (if anyone is interested the next one is Oct 10th @10:30 at the Hyde Park location… all are welcome, you don’t have to be a member to participate) and one of the other leaders who’ve I formed a relationship with asked me about my journey, so I told her what I was going through and she suggested that I after I finish seeing my dietitian have my doctor simply right that due to medical reason I have reached my goal. Then I can go into maintenance and head into Lifetime Membership. I’m frustrated because this is not how I wanted to do this, but as we all know things rarely go as we plan.

Last week I weighed in and I showed a 0.4 gain. I was happy with that despite all the activity I was putting in. I was premenstrual and figured that was it….this week was more of the same as far as activity was concerned and considering the fact that it feels like my face has grown twice it’s size (thanks prednisone moon face) I was expecting a gain but I was not expecting a 3.2 pound gain. I normally would be angry, but I’m doing everything that I’m supposed to be doing, and as much as I hate to say it …. this is simply out of my hand…. as it stands now my total  weight loss on Weight Watchers is  0.8 pounds…. like I said, nothing has gone as I planned.

For those of you interested Last Women Stepping ( 10,000 Steps every single day)….are gearing up for there October Challenge and all are welcome to join. This week I didn’t do to bad if I say so myself. This actually doesn’t reflect my pre-Weight Watchers walk (nearly 4 miles) it was good to get out and I was able to walk on the Lake Front and see the runner who were participating in the Chicago Half Marathon.

Also today I officially completed my 30/30 Challenge with Girl Trek and my golden shoe laces are on the way!!!

Honestly I think this is a good, this will be a true testament to my weight loss, if I can conquer the dreaded Prednisone….. that everything else should be a breeze.

Tyra Takes On Weight Watchers: 1 Year and a Restart Later

FitnessFor a few weeks now I have been going back and worth with myself trying to figure out if I could still justify paying for Weight Watchers when I haven’t really gotten the results that I wanted. I can honestly say that the expectations I had a year ago about my weight loss are completely different along with the myriad of health problems I’ve has made this journey frustrating beyond belief. Needless to say I decided to stay on the program a little longer, and to rededicate myself.

During the summer I went to both my General Practioner and Dietician to see what if anything I could do about my weight loss, I was (and still am sick and tired of this plateau…. I have literally been there since I joined, and I got unexpected answers..it’s okay to be in a plateau, that’s what bodies do, and after losing 78 pounds, it’s very possible that I won’t lose a substantial amount of weight, that teamed with the fact that I am now on Prednisone for the foreseeable future, a plateau is a very good place to be. It’s been difficult for me come to terms (yet again) that my autoimmune illness is active and things are happening to my body beyond control that will affect my weight. I was also subtly reminded that after two liver transplant and years of immunosuppression drugs, my body simply will not react the way it’s “expected”. there were weeks when I got in a funk and decided, “I’m on this medication, I might as well enjoy the weight again”  and I binged and it showed on the scale, then I would get back into the groove then I would get back in a funk…..

While all of this was going on, I remained active but the wright wasn’t coming off . I participated in several Weight Watchers sponsored 5K’s (I have a few more scheduled before the weather turns cold) and the weight still wasn’t coming off…. I had a mini epiphany, I can’t eat everything in fridge and workout, there has to be a balance…… I get it now, I’m working on balance. But the “middle” is someplace where I’m not comfortable being in, all my life I’ve had to work in extremes, and because of that I perform better, I’m learning all these new things about myself when I (along with the rest of my group gets the news that our leader is leaving; she’s off on another adventure, and this time she’s heading to Spain to teach English, I never want to begrudge a person’s growth and happiness, but a part of me, a huge part of me wanted her to stay. After that meeting was over I went to my car and cried, I felt like I wasn’t about to do this anymore, she (and the group) had become my weekly counseling session… what on Earth was I gonna do now? That following week we all said our goodbyes and we met our new leader; and like bratty children we saw our new “step mother” as an interloper; she would never compare to our mom, and we instantly didn’t like her. Weeks have passed since we got a new leader, and it’s been bumpy; and once again I had another epiphany. Leslie was not the reason I would come to those meetings, she gave wonderful advice and lead us, but I was the one that had to put in the work; and the support that I need was in that meeting room, so for the first time I took advantage….no matter where we are in our journey the nice thing is I can say “I’m struggling” or “I’m frustrated” and they understand and the don’t judge…. I decided since it was time to make a change maybe this new leader wouldn’t be so bad, she certainly wasn’t the leader that I wanted….. but maybe she’s the leader that I needed.

So this week was interesting to say the least last Friday I broke out in hives (yes I realize this is not Weight Watchers related) I was panicked, 1. No like hives, 2 This is the third allergic reaction that I’ve had since June and 3. I had a surgical procedure scheduled on Monday and I wanted to know if this was going to affect it. Went to quick care (after calling and not hearing back from 2 doctors my fear was that I was allergic to the Lovenox that was prescribed, I was told that was not it) medicine was prescribed and I thought all was well until I woke up the next morning with bruising all over my body,  Needless to say tat surgery didn’t happen, and since Monday SurpriseI’ve seen 4 doctors, increased my Prednisone by 100% (YIKES!!). So after 3 doctors went back and forth with each other my Lovenox was decreased (when I was off it for 2 days I went fine, no itching) took a dose , house later the itching started again and more bruising ….I have bruises on about 80% of my body..another doctors appointment then it was finally occurred to my doctor (cause I had been saying it all along) that I was in fact allergic to Lovenox.

Seriously, I itchy I’m bruised and any other time I would wallow in my antihistamine haze and eat. But not this time, that Prednisone increase scare the hell out of me, I know what Prednisone does to my body and for the first time in a long time I was scared that if I slide back, I wouldn’t be able to make it to this point, it wasn’t even a conscious choice, it just happed organically, I kicked up my workouts, started tracking …. honestly (yes even those things that I eat in the middle of the night) and I reached out to come of those connections I had made weeks earlier. my Weight Watchers has a Facebook page, and they have off shoot (Friends of Weight Watchers), 12027568_10153656969317792_2417940181286566140_nespecially for members were we can talk about what’s happening to us during the week, just a little added support…and just by chance someone posted something about a Challenge (I love a challenge) and Last Women Stepping ; 10,000 Steps every single day….at the same time I finally decided to be active with Girl Trek (where I have scheduled walking dates on Tuesdays, 1 and 3 Saturday and Yoga on Sundays), so I was able to be around like minded people, get outside (before the weather gets colder) and get some activity in…. So far I’m doing great with the challenge, I have hit my goal every day, Twice a week I’m walking with my cousin Michelle (who has just started her own weight loss journey) and going to the gym, I can usually hit my goal by noon; I have to be honest it feels amazing, even when I was itchy I was going to the gym, I actually went to the gym before I went to Quick Care (crazy, I know I was so miserable at the gym….I also didn’t know that activity causes histamine to rise, so I was itching more at the gym…… now I know….). So this getting up in the morning and working out has somewhat suppressed my appetite… I don’t get it, I won’t question it……so it will be interesting to see what the scale shows this week (the last two weeks have shown small losses  of 0.8 pounds and 1 pound) I’ve also gone ahead and signed up for the Englewood 5K. I’m excited….So far this week (Monday – Friday) I’ve earned over 54  activity points, stayed in my point range and will have lots of leftover weekly points by the end of the day.

Those of you on the Weight Watchers program know that I change has occurred (and from what I hear more changes are coming the beginning of the year) and it’s all about orange

There was nothing in our meeting room about changes coming soon, but after I got my new weigh-in book I realized something was different, while looking through it I realized that our leader had been “prepping” us weeks in advance, before we would officially start she would ask us about something that we did, for ourselves this week; that was completely separate from our weight loss, She always expressed how important it was to have “me time” How finding enjoyable things outside of your weight loss can tide you over on those weeks where you might not have success, in short…. Non Scale Victories and Celebrations…. when she first started talking about this I wasn’t ready to hear it, honestly I hadn’t fully accepted her into the fold so naturally I was blocking the information.

But I like the new changes, I like the small goals every 4 weeks and how focusing on you as a whole is now incorporated into your weight loss journey… like a lot of things recently this came at the right time. Things are not where I hoped they would be a year after I started Weight Watchers, but Weight loss humbles you, and you have to learn to be compassionate with YOURSELF….. I’m working on that…..
