Tyra Is In Love With Food–September 2014

As fall approaches Love With Food reminds us all that it’s time to Spice up our Lives  and our pantries with Septembers Deluxe Box

Excuse the bad acting and the extreme vocal fry…

Love With Food Cost: Tasting Box: $12/month / Deluxe Box: $19.95/month. Ships To: United States including its territories and APO/FPO/DPO Boxes.  I do have a Disclosure Policy But I do in fact pay for a Deluxe Box Every month (But if you want to send me a free box, I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to it)

Simply So Sweet Chili Tortilla Chips20140916_093542 . The very first thing you see on the bag is “Sprouted” (it’s on the bag in three different locations) these chips are made with Organic Sprouted seeds and grains. I’m not going to lie Sweet Chili is not the first flavor that I run to (they come is 5 different varieties) . These chips have Flax, Chia, Quinoa, Radish and Broccoli in them, so they have a very whole grain flavor to them. The Sweet Chili flavor is not overwhelming, and it hits you at the back of you mouth… but it’s not too bad. According to the website they are higher in antioxidants and other vital nutrients than ordinary chips and high in Omega 3 essential fatty acids (420mg per serving). This product is available in 1.25oz. bags and 5.5oz. bags. This product is certified Gluten Free, Non-GMO Project Verified, Kosher and Vegan20140916_093444

Rich Chocolate Cookie Thins  These grab and go packs are only 90 calories each Each bag roughly weigh is an a tiny 0.53oz. It comes in 5 different flavors (I bet those zesty lemon ones are great!) BUT you can purchase them in a box of 18 from the LWF website or go directly to Mandy’s site and get a box of 36. 5 Thins are included in each package…so you’re sure to get your chocolate fix. What I like the this is something that I would keep in my bag or in my car to snack on when I am craving a snack. The chocolate flavor is not overwhelming and personally I tasted the sugar more than I tasted the chocolate. I was a little confused about why this product was added in a box, after looking at the ingredient list the only thing I saw was vanilla…. so there you go.

Lemon Rosemary Seasoning With Lemon, Rosemary, smoked Black Pepper. Garlic and Salt.  When I first say this I thought that this 20140916_093432would be fantastic on baked fish…. so this will defiantly be something that I will use… and I’ll make sure to use it during a “What I Ate Wednesday” ad I will properly review this product then. This is an Organic and Gluten Free Product.

Hemp Rules Roasted Hemp Seeds These certified organic hemp seeds are Verified Non –GMO and are high in protein and an20140916_093519 excellent source if nine amino acids. I tried the Caribbean Blend and my first thought when I opened the package is , “it seems like sunflower seeds”, I guess I was waiting to have experience, but to be honest it didn’t take much like any thing, even the Caribbean flavoring was a bit underwhelming. Because the hemp seeds were roasted they are sort of hallow so you get a nice pop when you bite into them. 1 serving (and entire package) is roughly 168 calories. The website said that you can add them to soups, salads, and yogurt…this is something that I would totally pass on. It’s something different to serve but the amount of fat (14g) is a lot The package is 1.10oz. as well as a 6oz bag.

Green Super Food I always see this products (and ones like it) all the time, and I never once thought to try it, but this is one of those 20140916_093507things that I can see myself using from time to time, especially on those days when I have to be somewhere early in the morning and a quick smoothie is the best option to have on the road. The Product is Organic, Vegan, Certified Non-GMO and comes in 9 flavors. The packet I received said original on the outer wrapping, but when I opened it I realized that it was actually chocolate. You can purchase this in a variety of ways from the 15 1 serving pouches all the way to 100 serving tubs. I will use this on a What I Ate Wednesday and mix it with a bit of Almond Milk and see how I like it … I guess it’ll be fancy Super Food chocolate milk. This is just another product where it’s placement in the box confuses me.

5 Spice Caramels I get excited when candy is included in the boxes. Unfortunately this is not the case this month. I didn’t so much get the spices it was more salty that anything else, then there was the occasional crunch that complexly turned me off. The caramels have a hint of cinnamon, star anise anise seed (I guess that’s where the crunch came from), ginger, and clove. Although the websites said that the caramels they are topped with coarsely ground Himalayan Pink Sea Salt I didn’t physically see it that would account for the seriously extreme salty flavor. This limited edition flavor comes in a quarter pound box for a little bit under 10 bucks.

Maruso Ghost Soy Sauce  I love Soy Sauce, I use it all the time, I add it to my Ramen, my white rice, use it as a marinade and 20140916_093414sometimes I’ll add it to my homemade gravies…. but I am certain that I will not be using this. The one thing that I noticed right away was this sauce is a lot thicker than I used to. I guess that’s the black beans. The variety that I got was a 6.8 oz. bottle will cost you about $8 (HOLY COW!) I’m sticking with my Kikkoman (the regular version is 14.5oz. and will run you about $15. This is a Gluten free product.

Churro Kettle Corn  I’m a big fan of churros but recently I’ve had to slow down because of the calories The popcorn comes in a 1oz. bag and you can get 8 bags for about $15 directly from the LWF site. I’m not sure what more I can say about this popcorn besides the fact that it’s 140 calories per bag. I love it and I want more.

Original Pop Rings When I was growing up I used to love to eat Funyuns. This for sure would be a healthy alternative to them.not 20140916_093624quite as salty, these have a gentle sweet taste from the Maui onions. This bag comes in 1oz. and 2.5oz bags with three flavors to choose from, a serving with 1 serving (32 rings) is about 110 calories. This product is has no MSG, no Trans fat or artificial anything…. and they are yummy.

All Natural Beef Jerky I have not met a beef jerky that I didn’t enjoy… this particular brand comes in three flavors …what more can you say about jerky?$R5B3ZTT

I have to be honest, of what I able to try the best thing out of the box was the Chocolate This, I was really underwhelmed when I saw what the theme of the box was. When I first opened the box I was overwhelmed by the scent of the box, I instantly smelled all sports of spices and it really turned me off. I will say out of all of the Love With Food boxes I received this one is by far the one that I liked the least… I guess you could say I was not so in love with food this month.

This month Love With Food reminds us that September is World Hunger Month.. giving up some startling facts; 15.9 million children go hungry in American alone, for more facts and way for you to help check out the Feeding America site (And if you already subscribe to LWF you are already doing a small part, as 1 meal is donated for a regular box, and 2 meals are donated for Deluxe and Gluten Free Boxes). Tyra is in Love With Food–August 2014

Don’t you just love the summer? I always say that Chicago is at it’s absolute best in the summer. Festivals, block parties, concerts, and Fairs…Although we don’t have county fairs we do have State Fairs, which are fantastic, I didn’t make it to the Illinois State Fair, but I do go to the Wisconsin State Fair (I’m a Wisconsin girl, plus it’s closer) Why am I mentioning fairs? Because this month’s theme is “Fun at the County Fair” And of course I got to see the exhibits, and the animals, but more than anything I’m there for the food

Love With Food

Cost: Tasting Box: $12/month / Deluxe Box: $19.95/month. Ships To: United States including its territories and APO/FPO/DPO Boxes.  I do have a Disclosure Policy But I do in fact pay for a Deluxe Box Every month (But if you want to send me a free box, I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to it)

I hooked up with Love With Food after the Goodies Box ended (I was getting box the regular and the Kids box… no judging, I like my snacks!) and they referred me over to LWF. I like the idea of learning about new products that I normally wouldn’t have known about. And I especially love that a with each purchase of a LWF box 1 meal is donated (two meals when you get order the deluxe box) Recently Love With Food Introduced a Gluten Free Box that has about 8-12 snacks per month; it costs $25

The very first thing that I noticed when I opened the box is that they redesigned their information card…. well I guess it’s no longer a card, it’s actually a pamphlet  that give more detailed information about the products and the companyCollage

DSC03047Montreal Steak Spice Seasoning Potato Chips When I first saw the bags I was a little iffy, I’m not a big plan of Barbeque flavor, but they certainly did taste exactly what they mean to.. steak spice on potato chips. honestly they were too bad I would have preferred that they used a little bit less spice, because after a while thy get really salty and at the end of eating a big I felt like my mouth was burning….Honestly I felt like if I wanted to have this experience again I could recreate it myself…The bags that I got were 1.25 ounces. These are Glutton-free, and you can get a case of 13 bags for about $45.00.  each bag (36g) is 180 calories

Pineapple+Coconut Fruit Ice This product certainly seems targeted toward children, when I got ready to review it I realized that it need to be frozen… duh!!! This products is available on AmazoDSC03039n as well as Whole Foods and well as other Natural/Whole Grocery chains This product is verified non-GMO, Vegetarian and Glutton Free , each Smooze is around 70 calories and comes in a 65ml package.

DSC03040Cinnamon Grahams If you frequently fly on Jet Blue then you probably recognize this product. These squirrel shaped snacks are completely nut free (hence the name). I received two 1oz packages, but it also comes in a larger 10oz boxes. The website has a store locator to find a store closest to you, but you can by this product # 10oz boxes ) from Amazon, but apparently at this time this product is sold out. This product is whole grain with no fructose corn syrup and this product is about 130 calories per serving.

Salt Water Taffy I received both the Salty Peanut and the Salty Carmel Apple taffy. Salty Road makes six different flavors which include; Peppermint, Sea Salt Carmel (yum!), Vanilla  and Bergamot. The box comes in DSC030463.5 oz  boxes there are retailers in most major cities as well as Canada and England, but you can also buy this product from stores like Dean and Deluca and Treatsie . The only issue that I had with the candy is that it’s in the traditional wax paper and isn’t not marked which flavor you are eating and they all look the same so it really is a surprise what you’re getting. Each box weigh’’s 3.5oz

DSC03041Nutty Rice Bites with Blueberries  Comes in a 1.25oz bag and retails for about $1.49. You can get a 10% discount when you purchase a case of 10. I actually crunched this up and ate it worth my yogurt… it was fantastic! Each bag is 70 calories, so it’s the perfect low calorie treat

Crispy Cheddar Crackers these crackers have no cholesterol, no hydrogenated oils, preservatives or flavors. These remind me of the regular  cheddar crackers that I eat. The package that I received are DSC03043 1oz bags and you can buy this product in bulk at Amazon and there is a whole wheat variety as well… taking a page from Love With Food, I crunched these up and up them on top of my taco soup (I ran out of corn chips) Super YUM!!! Each bag (28g) is 130 calories

DSC03042Kettle Sweet Peanuts As far as I’m concerned you can never go wrong with nuts, these are a combination of salty and sweet, but these are gonna be used for the recipe for the cookies. Each bag is roughly 1.5oz and 140 calories. These can be purchased directly from the Love With Food website for 8 packages for $12.99

Lollipops You can get over 40 lollipops for 7.99 these are perfect if you have little ones, or a sweet tooth like me…these a perfect for you. I saw them in the box and stuck them in my purse cause you never know DSC03045when a sweet tooth is gonna strike you.

DSC03044Redwood Smoky BBQ Multigrain Chips These are, Gluten Free, Non-GMO and Vegan. When you think of healthy stuff you think of brown rice, Quinoa, Chia and Flax seeds… plus Garbanzo and all sorts of other things… I gave them to my younger brother and he said, “they aren’t bad” from him that’s high praise.. this products comes in 1.5oz and 6oz bags with calories of 140 for one serving.

Nut Butters My box included honey peanut better and chocolate hazelnut butter. It varies in calories based on the butter you receive, they come in several different varieties, so I’m sure there is something for everyone.DSC03038plus they have peanut butter cups! SCORE. This product comes in an 80 calories squeeze pack, 1.15oz squeeze pack and the traditional 16oz jar.

Coupons were a little thin this month, I only got one from Skeeter Nut Free for $1 off (if I purchase through Amazon) . I think my favorites from this box were the crispy cheddar crackers and the nut butters. Overall all I would give this box a 9 out of 10, but the products were great but I think they were reaching a but far trying to make them fit the theme. I’m looking forward to what they send next month

Unlikely Pairing

Writing Prompt – Bacon and chocolate, caramel and cheddar… Is there an unorthodox food pairing you really enjoy? Share with us the weirdest combo you’re willing to admit that you like — and how you discovered it.

You know honestly I’m not that adventurous with food, I usually find off combinations when food touch or when they accidently get mixed with one another.  The things that I find unlikely might be common place for someone for example:

Popcorn and Nacho Cheese: This happened out of curiosity when I was in the movie theater and ordered my self nachos and the person I was with had popcorn, she asked me if I wanted some and she literally dumped the popcorn over the melted  cheese and a love affair was born. So now when I go to the movies I order a cup of nacho cheese with my popcorn.

French Fries and Ranch Dressing: I think that happened out of necessity, I didn’t have any ketchup, but /I had some ranch dressing… it’s gotten to the point where I out it on my baked potato

Salt and Sour Potato Chips and Pickles: This used to my grandmother’s snack… and I grew up watching her eat it, so one day I asked to try it, and it wasn’t;t that bad… but holy sodium! (but I admit… that one is pretty odd)

Until Next Time….
