Friend Makin’ Mondays: More Randomness

1. Would you rather visit the doctor or the dentist?

hospyI would go to the dentist… Considering my medical history I fear that every time I go to a doctor’s appointment that my doctor is going to admit me to the hospital. It’s happened many times, and until recently I kept an overnight bag in my car, incase the doctor wants to admit me (they don’t trust me to go home, get some things and return), but they will escort me to the parking structure to get my bag and admit me (that makes me sound really bad… honestly although I gripe I have never run out and snuck home)

2. Would you rather eat broccoli or carrots?

I’m not a big fan of cooked carrots, but I’ll say broccoli, because I like them cooked or raw.

3. Would you rather listen to music or watch TV?

During the summer I don’t watch much TV. Except for Big Brother…. but my TV viewing goes way up in the fall… it’s one of my favorite times of the year…. unfortunately it seems like the TV shows that
I love and invest in are the ones that are canceled. I do listen to music… mostly in the car, or when I’m cleaning, but every night I listen to music to relax before I go to bed.

4. Would you rather own a lizard or a snake?

Neither I want to be a cat….. all on account that my cats seems to have a charmed life

5. Would you rather have a beach holiday or a mountain holiday?

A holiday is a holiday…. I’m not picky! Although I DON’T want to go skiing.

6. Would you rather BE an apple or a banana?

People say this is a strange question, but if anyone has ever done research studies (not medical studies) the one for products, they have very odd screening questions and this is one that was asked of me… and I was like, derp“What the hell kind of question is that?” But to answer your question I said Apple… because it makes good juice…

7. Would you rather be invisible or be able to read minds?

I would rather be invisible, I would NEVER want to read anyone’s mind. I know what I think about sometimes, and I would never want anyone to hear it…. besides what would you say to a person if you heard them thinking someone truly disturbing or destructive?

8. Would you rather be hairy all over or completely bald?

I have never been a hairy person, I shaved my legs in the 6th grade and the legs on my hair has never been the same… I think that I shave my legs maybe once a year. Considering I have lost my hair many times I don’t have a problem wearing wigs… out it to you this way… people have more than one pair of earrings… I have more than one wig…. it’s an accessory..

9. Would you rather be the most popular or the smartest person you know?

In high school I was nether the most popular or the smartest person… but I’m gonna vote for being smarter any day… if Facebook has taught be anything it’s that time becomes the great equalizer… being popular means absolute nothing 20 years after the fact. index

10. Would you rather make headlines for saving somebody’s life or winning a Nobel Prize?

Ooh this is hard…. I would rather save s person a be known for that… but I would totally be happy with the Nobel Prize so I could meet  Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden or Crown Prince Haakon of Norway…

Now it’s your turn to answers the questions on your blog. Don’t forget to come back here after and post a link to your answers and check out the answers of others who post too.

Friend Makin’ Mondays: Feeling Fruity

So it’s time for my Mountains and Molehills again. Molehills suck….This week I am going through some serious insomnia… always tired, not sleeping… super crabby I think it’s pretty self evident But I did have an awesome Mountain…. I went to the zoo; Brookfield Zoo to be more specific. I haven’t been since I was a child, for some reason I thought that it was a lot farther than it was… best part was I purchased a Zooper Fun Pass, which allows you to see all the special exhibits and you can continue to come to the zoo throughout the season all for the bargain price of 30 bucks. So I’ll defiantly be back a few more times before the new year. As crazy as it sounds I want to go to the zoo when it’s cold..just to have the experience. Now here’s the portion of the show when I show you pictures!

Before we begin due to a hiatus last week I did another FMM “Flashback“…. so check it out?

FMM-300x166_thumb[2]

Feeling Fruity

1. What is your favorite fruit?

Pineapple and strawberry.

2. Is there a fruit that you really really don’t like?

Papaya. I can’t look at them without getting sick to my stomach, smelling this is even worst.  YUCK!

3. If you could only drink one fruit juice for the rest of your life, what flavor would it be?

Apple..more specifically Martinelli’s apple juice

4. Tomatoes – fruit or vegetable?

Although technically it’s a fruit… I use it as a vegetable in cooking? Blueberries, raspberries, and oranges are true fruits, and so are many kinds of nut. Some plants have a soft part which supports the seeds and is also called a ‘fruit’, though it is not developed from the ovary: the strawberry is an example…. confused yet?

5. How many portions of fruit do you eat a day?

It really depends on the day… sometimes none, sometimes more than 5 …. I have found it more difficult to get my portions in because of the fact I have food restrictions due to being on a blood thinner , so I can only have a serving of a dark green fruit/vegetable a week… which sucks because I was the girl who had a ginormous salad at least 3 times a week.

6. if you were making a smoothie what fruits would you add?

Blueberries, Strawberries and Banana

7. Are you allergic to any fruits?

Yes.. citrus fruits. I can eat them but I have to limit the amount. I remember when I was younger my grandfather would always makes us this huge basket with apples and oranges and nuts for the holidays… I would eat all the oranges then wake up the next day with a rash around my mouth… and my mother would just look at me like, “that’s what you get for bing greedy”… my middle school I stopped.. the itchy rash wasn’t worth it anymore.

8. Do you have a favorite fruit recipe? Feel free to share the recipe with us.

Oatmeal-Brown Sugar Baked Apples (Serves 4, easily multiplied for larger crowds)

    • 4 apples, like Jonagold, Fuji, or Honeycrisp

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar (dark or light)
  • 1/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Pinch cloves
  • 1 tablespoon butter, divided in four
  • 1 cup hot water

Optional extras: orange zest, lemon zest, grated ginger, candied ginger, raisins or other dried fruit, chopped nuts, cream cheese, mascarpone, peanut butter, nutella

To serve: ice cream, crème fraîche, whipped cream

Pre-heat oven to 375°F with a rack in the lower-middle position. Remove the core of the apples, cutting to within a half inch of the bottom of the apple and creating a well roughly 3/4-inch wide. This is easy to do with an apple corer, but can also be done with a melon baller, grapefruit spoon, or a paring knife. Mix the brown sugar, oatmeal, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and any extras in a bowl. Divide this mixture between the apples, packing the wells firmly. Arrange the apples in a baking dish (like an 8×8 Pyrex dish), and top each one with a pat of butter. Pour the water into the bottom of the dish and cover loosely with aluminum foil. Bake for 20 minutes and remove foil. Continue baking uncovered until the apples are soft and the brown sugar has melted into a syrup, an additional 20 to 30 minutes. You can test the apples by poking a paring knife through the oatmeal mixture and into the interior of the apple; it should slide into the apple easily with no resistance. The skin on the apples will also become wrinkled and soft by the end of cooking.

Serve with a scoop of ice cream, crème fraîche, or whipped cream. Leftovers will keep for up to a week and can be reheated in the microwave or eaten cold

This is a recipe that’s easily customizable for people who are gluten free (use a gluten-free brand of oatmeal) or vegan (skip the butter and serve the apples plain of with coconut whipped cream). The best part of this is the basic recipe is only 97 calories….

9. Do you have any fruits that are local to your area?

appples

Not so much in Illinois. But our state fruit (because everyone has them is the Goldrush Apple (which is quiet pretty) It’s a cross between a Golden Delicious and other apples. But in Wisconsin people (me included) are crazy for cherries, more specifically Door County cherries.

10. What is your favorite fruit pie?

I love pie….apple, peach, pecan…. heck even a pot pie…. yum!!

Now it’s your turn to answer the questions. Don’t forget to come back here and leave a link to your post in the comments, so we can check out everyone’s answers.

Until Next Time!

3. When you were at school, what did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was in the second or third grade I wanted to be a secretary. I loved (and still love) the idea of paper , pens, files and all those things…but as I got older that answer changed. I thought about being a doctor, a teacher and a a nurse (I wanted to be in a position where I could help people) As I’ve gotten older, I think the job that would suit me the most would be a writer.

4. If you could invent a gadget, what would it be and why?

Something that would take inventory of the room and be able to locate something if it goes missing. I can’t tell you how many times, I lose my keys, my phone, my cats…. a gadget like this would make my life so much easier.

5. What is your favorite quote?

If you’re going through hell, keep going  – Winston Churchill
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to recite this to myself…. life sucks sometimes…and it might seem like what ever struggle your going through is never ending… but eventually you come out on the other side, stronger than you were before

6. What is the best meal you have every had?

It was spaghetti that my mother had, now I should probably explain this because I hate spaghetti… but at the time I was awaiting my second liver transplant, I was depressed and so sick and I didn’t want to celebrate my birthday AT ALL. My mom asked me to come over and my cousin Michelle was there and even though I wasn’t eating much during that time I made an effort to eat… and it was fantastic. I will always remember that birthday and that plate of spaghetti… FYI: My mom said the reason why it tasted so good was because she put a little bit extra love in it

7. If you could choose your age forever, what  you  would you choose and why?

I would be 17 years old. I was emotional and moody as a teenager…. I was in such a rush… to be an adult… to be free… and looking back now I want to just cry because I was in a  rush to do nothing. I think I spent most of my life saying, “I can’t wait to turn 18” Then when I did it was such a let down … nothing magical happened; I didn’t instantly become an adult… I felt exactly the same as did when I turned 17…it wasn’t until years later when I turned 30 when I actually felt like an adult.

8. What TV game show would you like to go on?

FamilyFeud2007Logo

I have always wanted to go on the Family Feud, and I ALWAYS tell my family that I would have to hire people to pretend to me my family so that we can win

9. If you had one day to live over again, what day would it be?

Honestly I don’t know, I think maybe  I would have a better idea when I’m 80 years old

10. You are planning the most awesome dinner party of your life. Which 3 celebrities/historical figures (past or present) would you add to you guest list?

Queen Elizabeth, Marilyn Monroe, and Abraham Lincoln

Friend Makin Mondays: Life Skills

All about Queens Day in AmsterdamSo a few days ago the Netherlands celebrated their very first King’s Day(Koningsdag), why am I even mentioning this since I don’t live in the Netherlands, nor am I of Dutch decent? If you are a long time reader of this blog then you might downloadremember that I am a huge fan of Princess Beatrix , I even wore my Zoya nail polish “Beatrix” during the week of her abdication.  I am a huge fan of Beatrix as well as the entire family and honestly how can you not love a woman who’s worn the same hair style for over 40 years…You can always tell when it’s (Queen’s or ) King’s Day… everyone and everything is decked out in orange

CaptureSo what were my Mountains and Molehills this week? My Mountain? Check out this snapshot of Tsuki’s instagram (it happened about 20 minutes ago)  My molehill this week was taking Tsuki to the veterinarian on Friday, after talking to the doctor and discussing the situation, we both came to the conclusion that it was best to proceed with the biopsy, after they took her vitals they took her back… and I burst into tears, I didn’t stop crying until they brought her back and I was able to see for myself that she was okay. We get the results back no latter than Tuesday and in the mean time I’m just keeping an eye on her, she’s still a little tender, but otherwise she’s back to normal. Before I forget I’m not sure if you know but Tsuki wrote her very first blog post AND she has an instagram…she’s a true diva!

Life Skills

1. Do you know how to drive a stick shift?

No, and to be honest I feel a little lacking because of it. I will never be able to drive internationally…. Sad smile

2. Do you know how to jump stat a car?

Nope I don’t. BUT I do have jumper cables in my car… and yes I’ve had to use them 3 times so far. I keep saying that I’m going to back one of those electronic jumpers in case I’m stranded in the middle of no where.. but then again, there is always AAA

3. Do you know how to perform CPR?

I think it’s really important for everyone to have a basic knowledge of First Aid and CPR. But yes I am certified in First Aid CPR and AED.

If you’re not and you’re interested check out this link

4. Do you know how to hang a picture?

First of all I think anyone who’s every lived in an apartment or lived in a dorm room knows alternate ways of hanging a picture in your room… but traditionally speaking I do know how to hand a picture. I use a level and everything.

5. Do you know how to ski?

A big NO! As a black person I jokingly say that “we are a tropical people, we don’t ski” and for all you non black people out there that is a HUGE misconception. There is actually something called the National Brotherhood of Skiers My high school would go on ski trips all the time, and when I was living in Las Vegas I wanted to go but I’m a big scary cat, and I’m afraid of heights, and I’m too much of a control free to “glide” down a mountain with only poles and skis to guide me.

6. Can you draw a basic map of the world?

Never tried…. so I guess I can attempt to do so… hey didn’t turn out half bad, I think I forget Hawaii…and Florida is incomplete…
20140428_115214

7. Can you do a decent dive into a swimming pool?

Oh hell no! I’m still kinda iffy on the swimming, plus I’m accident prone. I was actually walking on a deck and slipped and fell into the pool…. so wait… I guess “technically” that is diving!!

8. Can you open a champagne bottle?

Yes… considering that I can’t drink alcohol… and haven’t been able to o so for pretty much my entire life (thanks for no liver disease) I know lots of tricks

9. Do you know what to do if you spill red wine on the carpet?

Nope…I don’t have carpets and I don’t drink red wine… so that’s a simple fix1

10. Do you know the proper way to fold a fitted sheet?

Yes, and I learned how to properly do it from Oprah and Martha Stewart… it’s funny how you see something on TV and you remember it.

So the current count of things Tyra can do is 8 out of 10! So that’s bad…..not bad at all!!! After last weeks FMM a lot of people reached out to me either leaving a message here or emailing me sending me good thoughts and positive vibes, sharing their pet stories and I just want to say from the bottom of my heart Thank You… Thank You Very Much!!! I look forward to spending many, many healthy years with Tsuki!

as my Dutch friends say…

Tot de volgende keer
