Nail Polish Lottery Club–Week 79

You will never know the sadness that overcame me when I had to remove last week mani, I loved it… I think if I was a nail polish that would be it…but my excitement and over adornment of my pick quickly faded when it came time to remove it. I think its time for me to pull out the big guns and use the glue method because even though I used the foil method it took forever, and I still had to go back and do a lot of clean-up; black polish and glitter is a dangerous pair…. wow!

20140706_214348Julep’s Catrina is described as marigold yellow crème according to the website I like to think of it as egg yolk yellow. I’ve had this for a while as this polish came in the September 2013 box. Yellows have always ben colors that I’ve been weary of yellows, they just seem like they are made for trouble, and of course there is the whole, “is it gonna look right on me”

20140706_214249It’s been a good while since I’ve used a Julep polish, but this particular polish was somewhat thin and the first coat was very streaky, I got super concerned that maybe I did something wrong and should have used a white 20140706_214337undercoat before I started my first layer. But not to worry everything evened out by the second (which I was really grateful for). Although this would not have been my first choice for a color this week, I have to be honest it’s a very striking color… but something was  missing, I’m still missing the wow…. I mean this color is still “in your face” but I decided to add some of my favorite comic book water decals for a little added pop and a bit of nail art, that I have been desperately needing.

20140706_220343Let’s be honest there is not much I can say about this polish…. it’s great! it looked great….The last time I wore a yellow polish I think that I was still on the fence. But this color has really tipped me over the edge, I really like it, but unfortunately me liking Julep’s nail polishes are hit or miss. Although it was a bit thin I totally loved this polish… and I think it looks really good on me. so in love with the color.  So this week’s pick get’s a 9 out of 10 points!

I had to ask permission to get a photo this week Tsuki is such a diva… she was laying on her pillow and graciously lifted her head so that a 20140706_213556photo could be taken… you can barley see the polish, but like I said she was in a bit of a mood.

Nail Polish Lottery Club – Week 68

I would be remiss if I didn’t remind everyone that today is Earth Day which is really one of my favorite days…. here are some fun facts

  • The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970. 11
  • Earth Day originated in the US but became recognized worldwide by 1990.
  • On Earth Day 2009, Disney released a documentary film called Earth that followed the migration paths of four animal families.
  • On the very first Earth Day, 20 million people gathered in the streets of America to protest the industrial revolution. An environmental movement was born as a result.
  • Every year on April 22, men, women, and children collect garbage, plant trees, clean up coral reefs, show movies, sign petitions, and plan for a better future for our planet.
  • Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day while he was working as a US senator.
  • Earth Day was renamed officially by the UN in 2009 as International Mother Earth Day.
  • Some schools and communities celebrate Earth Day for a whole week to expand the time frame that people focus on the earth and how they can preserve it.
  • On Earth Day 2012, more than 100,000 people rode bikes in China to reduce CO2 emissions and save fuel.
  • In an Earth Day celebration in 2011, 28 million trees were planted in Afghanistan by the Earth Day Network.
  • In Panama, 100 endangered species of orchids were planted and maintained to prevent their extinction in honor of Earth Day.

And of course on the nail polish front to remind you of Zoya Earth Day Nail Polish Exchange

I was looking to try something new, lately I have been really unhappy with the polishes that Julep has come out with, so on a whim I signed up for Color Me Monthly  Color Me Monthly is a monthly nail polish subscription that sends out an affordable bottle of non-toxic, vegan, and cruelty-free polish in earth-friendly packaging. The subscription costs $7.00/month. The very first polish that I got was a creamy lavender 20140415_183737named, Chiffon; which is perfect for Easter/Spring and it was rather fortuitous that his popped up in my mail about a week ago

Whenever I am given a new polish that I’m not familiar with, I find myself filled with anticipation and dread. I really, really want the polish to work out but at the same time I am always expecting major disappointment.

The plan was to spotlight my CMM polishes the month they were mailed as an additional spotlight with my NPLC posts, but it didn’t work out that way this week… I guess the universe knew how eager I was to try this polish.
When I first sat this polish I thought that the bottle looks a little bit like an Essie bottle, but after close inspection I realized that the handle is longer, which is great for me..I tend to have a better experience with the polish if the handle is a little bit longer, so I went in blind with this polish, a new company, a totally new color for me… HOLY  COW!
I am a girl who takes her nail polish seriously, and I tend to be very fickle with my polish, and one small thing can set me off… so I was thinking maybe the brush would be wonky, the color would be thin… but nothing… there was NOTHING. I was instantly in love from the first coat; why because this polish is a true one coater….completely opaque once it hits the nail, you don’t come across many nail polishes that can do that.. and that alone gives this polish major points.

nplcCollage

So you know I had to check and see if maybe the color would change on the second coats, and as you can see from the photos above, it’s exactly the same; there isn’t any difference in the opacity of the color which tells me one thing, this polish is a great bargain because I’m not using as much on the nail…

When I went on instagram  to look at this month’s pick I only saw swatches of this polish on Caucasian women, I didn’t see any swatched of with any darker skin tones so I was concerned if the polish   darker skin tones; which you know is always20140415_183641 an issue with me, especially with lighter polishes.

I’m not sure if it’s the color or the fact that spring is (sometimes) here #BIPOLARWEATHER or simply the fact that Easter just passed but this color seriously takes me back when I wore white tights and pastel dresses with a serious petticoat. 30-year-old Tyra couldn’t get away with that look … but anyway back to the polish

The application of the polish was smooth and I had no issues at all with the brush. Overall I was really impressed with this weeks pick and look forward to future CCM mailings. I dont’ know that it is  but seriously it seems like third time is the charm, with the past two weeks scoring high this one breaks away and get’s a perfect score. This polish get’s a 10 out of 10! Ladies…run… run and go get this polish!

Until Next Time…

WEEK 53 RANDOM NUMBER WAS 354

Alternate number  3 +5 + 4 = 12

Essie’s Decedent Dish

Collage111

I know this is a week late, but I was busy mourning the loss of  4 nails… who breaks 4 nails in  2 days?…. This chick does. In all fairness I think it hard something to do with the nail hardener I was wear and the polar vortex I was out in *sad face* And this is gonna be several weeks in once, things have been busy with having to prepare for births, sitting in on classes and dealing with the uber cold weather.

20131230_220544

One thing that really bothered me about this polish is that the iridescence found in the bottle was nowhere to be found on my fingers.  No matter how I tried to photograph it, it simply wouldn’t work. Overall it was a good solid color… Despite that I really loved the way this color looked on my nails, and when has anyone really had major issues with Essie… this get’s an 8 out of 10.

WEEK 54 RANDOM NUMBER WAS 354

Alternate number  35 + 4 = 39

Julep’s Zelda

zelda1_thumb2

For any one taking notice, this is the exact same number as last week. I love the look of the polish, but it didn’t really look that great on me. I think it had to do with the pink undertones. Julep seems to be really consistent with their polishes and there is nothing that I can say any different about this polish that I haven’t written before about other Julep polishes.  This polish did have a consistent shine throughout the week. This polish get’s a 6 out of 10.20140117_223230

THIS RANDOM NUMBER WAS 283

Alternate number  2+8 + 3 = 13

nikak

Nicka K New York’s Ripe Apple

This is as another goodie that I got from Ipsy, and this polish was issue right from the start. Although I was quite taken with the lovely shape of the bottle, the shape makes it really difficult to open the bottle sue to the really narrow handle… said narrow handle also makes it uber tricky to get a good grip to apply the polish. Ever since I got the polish I was really excited to try it on my nails… but before I put the color on my nails 20140121_205813I had to do a little repair on the brush since it as a little wonky….eek!!! I put a coat on my nails and the next day when I went to add a second layer the brush was exactly like it was the first time, so I had to cut the brush a second time.

The color was fantastic! A deep red that had a lot of shine. And with a good topcoat this polish lasted all week with minimal wear on some of my tips, and I was pretty upset about taking it off, but it as a new week, which means a new polish…. This one despite the issues that I had get’s a 8 out of 10, it would have gotten a solid 10 if there weren’t any brush issues…. 20140122_123852

Next week we will get back to our normal nail polish schedule… the next few weeks should be interesting considering I am starting to run out of polishes….. I might have to make some creative decisions…

images1This polish comes from the September 2013 It Girl Box. Candace is a gorgeous fall shade (and I’m kinda pissed that I haven’t worn it sooner) that reminds me of different shades of leaves when they turn. This is such a hard polish to describe and I know this doesn’t make sense but it’s a golden chocolate microglitter . I love a good micro glitter; it gives you a little something to stare at … sometimes you see the brilliance and sometimes you don’t… and this one would probably would look fantastic in a club with all the lights bouncing off of it; but I’m old and boring and won’t be in a club anytime soon, so maybe one of my more hip readers can tell me if it’s true.

20131224_101145I generally like Juelp polishes.. I’ve never head a polish with this except for that horrid white one that I wore that cracked with it 15 minutes of wearing it.. but let’s not dwell on unpleasant things, this polish is a true one coater And as a brown girl this polish looks fantastic on me…. let’s be honest this polish would look fantastic on anyone. I feel like I should put on a sparkly jumpsuit and blast “Turn the Beat Around” and dance around my house.

I could not stop looking at my nails, and I also got a lot of complements on this polish which totally added to the “love it” factor… when total strangers stop you to complement your polish you know you’ve got a winner on your fingers. This polish is getting a 10 out of 10… what a great way to end the year!

For me 2013 has been a very trying year for me  and my hope for myself and all of my blog reader is 2014 turns out better than the previous year. 20131224_101239 Happy New Year!

Until next time!

Nail Polish Lottery Club – Week 26

20130629_200312First thing first, I cut my nails… I had been going back and forth over whether I wanted to trim my nails, then a super dramatic break made it almost impossible for my to patch….so I did the big chop, and I gotta say I’m loving the short(er) and sassy nails… honestly I think they look healthier and seems like the polish is looking better on my nails…no on to this weeks pick!!!

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM NUMBER IS 204

If you do not have that many polishes in your collection use 24 (or 6)

Julep’s Bunny

nplc26

Generally as a rule of thumb I do not add white or black nail polish to my list of untried, that’s for several reasons; one, I tend to purchase those colors regularly… and their primary use is for nail art or as an “undie” But this polish was different than the other white’s that I owned, and I instantly wanted it on my nails…the Julep website describes this color as “Crisp white linen with fine gold shimmer” and I instantly knew that it DSC02531was a little different from the other white polishes that I own…  take a look and see for yourself. Now when I saw the polish the motivator to wear it alone was the “fine gold shimmer” imagine my surprise when I put the polish on and I couldn’t find any visible gold shimmer…. looked at my nails at length in different type of lighting and still no gold shimmer…. must be some magic that Julep concocted because you can clearly see the shimmer on the bottle. Now I did go and search out other reviews of this nail polish because I wanted to see if there was a “user error” on my part. And it seems like this polish is hit and miss some people got shimmer, other’s said that this shimmer was clumpy and hard to separate…so who knows…

Before I go any further let me wish all who celebrated a happy belated Canada Day and Independence Day… and for those of you who didn’t I hope you had a wonderful week!! Because it was an extended holiday weekend for me I wanted to be a patriotic and do a easy and fun 4th of July Mani…4th of july and that stay on my nails from Monday till Thursday night, so when I got home from the festivities I changed my mani so that I could give a fair review of Bunny… the application was smooth, I used two coats and was happy with the look (aside from the non shimmer). The next day I was cracksat the gym and I noticed that I had developed fine cracks in the polish, I’ve never had this happen to me before, I’m not sure if it was the combination of the Julep polish formulation and the Sally Hansen Ultra Wear Top Coat.

To give you all a mental picture of the cracks (which were on 4 of 5 of my nails on each hand) where like the fine cracks that are in old china (the exposure on the photo has been adjusted so that the cracks can be seen clearly) For me, white nail polish is always a bit tricky, but I have never had this issue with white polish…… maybe it was simply band luck.

Now I had a LOT to say about this polish, because it seriously hurt my feelings (why has the last couple of pick have done this to me?!) And I did a video where I verbally expressed my feelings, maybe a bit too loud (and to prove I am currently having bad luck) The video quality was fantastic but there was no sound!!!! No Sound!!!But I will post it anyway…. it’s pretty funny actually.. As far as a rating is concerned, this one get’s 4… seriously! I got no shimmer and instead I got cracks after 114 hours of wear… 8 of which I was asleep…. this one will be added to the whites I use for nail art. Hopefully week 27 will bring me better luck!!

Until Next time…
