Secret Santa

Writing Prompt: You get to choose one gift — no price restrictions — for any person you want. The caveat? You have to give it anonymously. What gift would you give, and to whom?

I love Secret Santa, I think because at the end it all boils down to the look on the person’s face when the get the gift, then when they find out who gave it to them. As I mentioned in a previous post, gift giving is super stressful for me, so I like to ask ahead of time what you want, then I get it for you… yes I realize that is the total opposite of what I just said about the Secret Santa… listen people I am a multi-faceted and complex person who changed her mind when the wind blows…

My mom has always been a hard worker and she earns every penny she receives, so I would like to give her an little bonus this holiday season, a gift of cold hard cash of $50,000. I think she would appreciate that (hell who wouldn’t?), but I know my mother better than anyone else, she would see a check for that amount and think it was a joke, then she would think it was real and figure who gave it to her and why… she wouldn’t even cash it until she got some information about the person who gave it to her.

I love my mom, but sometimes giving her gifts is a pain, and giving things to her anonymously is damn near difficult, exposing myself and telling her that I was the one who gave her the money would open up a whole new can of beans, I can already hear her say, “Tyra how did you get all that money? Did you do something illegal?”

But at the end I think it would still be worth it…

Tyra Takes on Weight Watchers–Week 14

There is something that I’ve noticed during the meetings during the Marathon of Food; you know that time between Thanksgiving and Christmas (and this is no judgment at all but as we creep towards Christmas the number of people coming to meetings gets smaller and smaller, and I get it. Lots of things tend to happen this time of the year and priorities shift, and let’s be honest there have been a few weeks when I DID NOT want to go to a meetings, (and I think this shows a lot of growth on my part) but I go anyway, I go because those might be the times when I’m getting discouraged and need to attend a meeting, just to reaffirm that I am doing exactly what I’m doing.

Last week I didn’t make any goals, but I did say that I wanted to show a loss after the Christmas holiday’s and honestly this week I didn’t think that I was gonna lose anything considering I haven’t been active at all and doing nothing much else but sleeping, but the scale showed a loss of 2.4 pounds. I’m thankful… and with that loss came the added bonus of hitting my 5% goal!!! YIPEE!!! And naturally I got swag… this sticker was a lot bigger than the regular Bravo! stickers we get in the meetings, but I love it!!

Also finally we got the charms in from the “Share Your Success” promotion. (Apparently my WW store’s was sent late). If you’re not familiar with the promotion  you had to attend six or more meetings between Nov 2 and Dec 27 (The Marathon of Food!!) and you get a cute little snow flake charm! It’s cute a lot smaller than they showed on the picture… but cute.

So this weeks Topic was another timely one,  we talked about the link between sleep and weight loss. Let’s be clear, when you get more sleep you’re better at everything, and I think it has to do with the fact that you are more rational and able to make clearer decisions, this includes what you put in your month. My sleep has always been weird, there are times when I have suffered from severe insomnia, there are times when all I do is sleep, and like now there are times when I sleep for 6-7 hours and it’s not restful, and I wake up tired and groggy or my sleep is broken, (I sleep for 3 hours, wake up for an hour then go back to sleep for another 4 hours). So how well I sleep at any given moment is never a given.

One of my goals on terms of weight loss for the upcoming year is to improve my sleep hygiene, on the days when I don’t sleep well (which I’m currently going on a two month streak) I don’t go to the gym, because seriously I think getting on a treadmill might be dangerous… did I ever share the story how (I think it was 2 years ago) was suffering from insomnia and was desperate for some sleep, so around 5 in the morning I went to the gym, I figured working out would tire me out, got on the treadmill and ran for about 30 seconds and the next thing I knew I was looking at the ceiling…. not an experience I want to do again, so I stay home)

I guess when you think about it there are a lot of reasons why we aren’t getting the sleep that we need, we’re busy raising families, working and basically surviving… and if you’re anything like me, sometimes your brain is too busy to simply fall asleep, and the longer I’m awake the it’s more likely that I’m gonna reach for snacks and eat until my heart is content.

So this week I’m gonna work on giving myself on bed time of 10:30… everything is turned off, and I’ll see if that works any with my sleep situation. This week I would like to continue on the trend and see a post Christmas weight loss.

What’s your advice of getting restful sleep??

Getting Seasonal

Writing Prompt: The holiday season: can’t get enough of it, or can’t wait for it all to be over already? Has your attitude toward the end-of-year holidays changed over the years?

I pretty much discussed this in yesterday’s post.

It could have something to do with childhood innocence, but I used to love Christmas, our house was always festive, there was always a ton of food and so many people would be at our house, and naturally the gifts, I just remember there used to be piles and piles of gifts under then tree, for a long time after that Christmas was never just a one-day events it was a lead up that happened the day after Thanksgiving and just exploded on Christmas day. As I got older things changed, now the day after Thanksgiving just pisses me off, I can’t do anything or go anywhere without being trampled my people, and it really has become a day that I hate. Putting up our Christmas tree used to be an event that I couldn’t wait… we would listen to music… now it’s just a lot of work… I am seriously becoming the scrooge, and I’m okay with that. What happened to all those wonderful Christmas feelings? Is this how it’s gonna progress for the rest of my life? I used to love this time of the year, but now I just feel blah about it… and can’t wait for it to be over.

In Due Time

Writing Prompt:What’s your next, most pressing deadline? Are you excited, stressed, or ambivalent about it? What’s the first thing you’d like to do once you’re done with it?

There hasn’t been an pressing deadlines or appointments lately, oddly enough December has been an “easy month for me”. Health wise I’m feeling a bit uncertain about my upcoming oncologist appointment, but seriously every time I there I’m feeling stressed and uncertain. These days I wake up and go through the motions not sure what the day was, yesterday I thought yesterday was Tuesday, and was shocked to learn that it was not. So imagined my surprise when I realized Christmas was only days away. Like Thanksgiving, Christmas has always been just a time for celebrate and be thankful, but this year it feels me with a little bit of dread, I’m already thinking, “I got get dressed and drive over to my parents house early in the morning, I have to deal with stupid jokes that aren’t funny and listen forced to listen to Christmas music when I do want to (now let me just say that I enjoy Christmas music, I don’t think that it should simply be limited to just the holiday season, I often listen to it in the extreme heat to have “winter thoughts” to cool myself down) but this year I haven’t even listened to one song, put up one decoration… nothing.

I wonder if my feeling this way has something to do with the fact I didn’t go through the holiday motions… my holiday shopping was done before Thanksgiving, and gifts were wrapped soon after, I haven’t watched my favorite holiday themed movie “Love Actually”, or it could have something to do with me not feeling well and being super fatigued all the time, or the fact that I’m still trying to deal with the unexpected death of my cousin (due to an undiagnosed heart condition), it could be a lot of things. This year Christmas will be just another day. …maybe next year will be better…
