Nail Polish Lottery Club – Week 65

For the past several weeks I’ve noticed a huge change in my hair and nails, my hair is starting to fall out… I’m pretty sure it’s the blood thinner that I’m taking and my nails have gotten so brittle that they break super easily, I actually pulled off my glove to find that I had broken 2 nails and the broken pieces where just chillin’ out in the gloves… so I just decided to chop them all off… it’s a better look that having nails of different lengths… this is the shortest my nails have EVER been and my finger tips feel weird, I’m seriously thinking about going to the nail place and asking them to put on some tips….

Essie’s Smokin’ Hot

13933173

20140331_194528According to the Essie website Smokin’ Hot is from Essie’s Winter 2010 A Winter’s Tale collection (but now apart of the permanent collection) a describes as a fox grey, but let’s be real and call it what it’s really is.. it’s a kind of purplish brown grey color. Grey is generally not a color that I can wear, for me grey seems like a hot or miss color; kind of like pink is for me. but this color is amazing, but as you can tell (and from when it was originally released) this polish is more suited to the Fall and Winter seasons and it really complements my skin tone. This color is very similar to Zoya’s Kelly but after looking online, there are several dupes to this particular polish…. some are even cheaper.

20140331_194624

As I mentioned before this is a great color; and the color on your nail is pretty much to color in the bottle,  while the Essie website explicitly states that this polish requires two-coats I’m here to tell you that this is simply not the case. This polish is very thin and streaky so even if you can get the look you require in two-coats, you’re gonna be touching up spots to remove the steaks that are present. Because I had to use three coats the dry time was a little bit longer than I’m used to… not totally surprised as I’m not a big fan of Essie; many because their formulas are not consistent and for the price I’m paying I’m gonna need more quality than what I’m currently getting.

Since the weather is really nice lately… it was nearly 70 degrees here in Chicago, I wanted to lighten up the nails so I used Sinful Colors’ Show Stopper as a topper and gave it a little sparkle…if my nails are gonna be short, then they sparkle is going to blind you! And then I sealed it with Sally Hansen’s Diamond Top Coat. So this polish is going to get a 5 out of 10, and that’s because I’m really torn; I’m not sure if I like it or loathe it.

So I’ll be rockin’ short and sassy nails for a while…

March Photo of the Day

There is something hopeful about March,

something benevolent about the light,

and yet wherever I look snow

has fallen or is about to fall, and the cold

is so unexpected, so harsh,

that even the spider lily blooming

on the windowsill seems no more

than another promise, soon to be broken.

It is like a lover who speaks

the passionate language of fidelity, but

when you look for him, there he is

in the arms of winter.

MARCH-photoaday-Ma-and-GrandyLast month’s photo of the day attempts where hit or miss… but for the most part I had fun and I liked taking the pictures, and in a few exceptions going back into my archives to find them. All pictures have been take with my cell phone, unless noted.

So what are the rules? Glad you asked

HOW TO PLAY PHOTO A DAY

Playing photo-a-day couldn’t be easier. It really couldn’t. Here’s how to play:
Grab your camera or phone or photo-taking-device.
Look at the monthly list to find the prompt for the day. {The number corresponds to the date of the month}.

Cover Girl Outlast Stay Brilliant Glosstini in Inferno

(limited edition capital collection)

I’m telling you I have tried to write this blog so many times, only to have something in my way… Monday I was all set to write my thoughts down, but then I was rushed to the ER…. Kidney Stones, Tuesday and Wednesday I was so drugged out of my mind it’s not even funny, Thursday my plans was to get it out in the evening, but we had to rush my step father to the ER…. so here we are o Friday….. it’s be a LONG WEEK!!

nplc break

Before we talk about this weeks polish I just want say that my nail is still stained for the nail polish I used two weeks ago, but then again what can you expect when the nail polish costs $1…. did I mention that I finally found out where I got the polish, and they have a wall full of them…I might have to make a visit to that beauty supply store.

First off holy cow, that’s a mouthful…. good job Cover Girl! Inferno is part of a nine piece collection inspired by Hunger Games: Catching Fire , the

collection also includes: lip gloss, mascara and nail stickers. It’ odd 20140317_211222that I even purchased this nail polish because I was not a huge fan of the movies (gasp!! I know…..) . The mini polishes  are 0.11 fluid ounces as compared to it’s regular size sister which is .37. fluid ounces. Cover Girl seems to be using the Glosstini line to introduce their limited edition polishes.

 20140318_183725

20140318_183648The nail polish; as was the entire collection was cute, but it’s probably not something I would go out and purchase again. The small size makes it cumbersome to paint your nails since the brush is smaller, and for the price I paid I would have much rather preferred to buy the polish in full size (especially when I own something similar from Wet n Wild which costs $1.99), I was blinded by the glitter and the sparkle.

nplc break

Although it loo20140318_183742ks somewhat bronz-y Inferno is actually a pink tone  nail polish with gold shimmer, and I wasn’t able to see the “true” color unless I was outside….The dry time was amazing on the polishes and this was a true two-coater and with a shine that is supposed to last for a  full week 9Cover Girl claims)  so I didn’t add a topcoat.. oddly enough I didn’t have any issues with this nail polish… no chipping, no dullness… but in all fairness I didn’t do anything this week but sleep.

This nail polish despite it’s little size and it’s limited edition status… get’s a solid 7 out of 10

Looks like the odds are totally in my favor today …until next time!

Ulta Salon Formula Nail Lacquer’s Limelight

Limelight is (as the name implies) a lime green crème, and it’s the type of green that’s cute and trendy and something that you could incorporate into different season, when I initially purchased this polish it was intended for the fall, it never occurred to me until I pulled this polish as this week’s pick that it’s perfect for the spring/summer…
This color reminds me of grass, not sure if that actually the case of just a bit of wishful thinking since it’s still cold and dreary here in Chicago , and where there isn’t snow there is frozen, brown, grass *sad face*.

20140315_225143Be careful with this polish it’s on the thin side, so if you want a polish that is quick to put on before you go out on the town, this is NOT the polish for you. This polish takes between 3 to 4 coats to be opaque. When I put on the first layer, I was SHOCKED at how this it was, I knew that I hadn’t had the polish for this long, and I recently reviewed another Ulta Salon Formula polish and it wasn’t that thin at all. I put on the first layer and I was seriously about to pack it in… it was so thin you could barley see the polish at all on my nails. So I went to work on something else, while I allowed the polish to dry, and by the time the second layer was put on it didn’t seem like a complete loss. Turns out this polish was a shocker… by the fourth layer (yeah I know) I had seriously fallen in love with this color. But I kept wanted to add more layers of polish because it seemed like there was a some streakiness on some of my nails.. It’s trendy (I said that already), vibrant, 20140315_225207totally St. Pat’s AND it looks fantastic with my skin tone… I think that has something to so with the lack of yellow in this particular shade of green.

So let’s get down to the nitty gritty although my previous experience with brand of polish it’s clear that there is no real consistency across the board. Honestly as much as I love the color it takes a long time and a lot of coats for me to get the look that I wanted, and to me that seems like I’m getting less value for the money that I spent on it; and the color is simply not unique enough for me to recommend this polish to others.

If this polish was a little bit thicker and able to get the look that I wanted in coats, it would have scored a 10… that’s how much I loved the color, but it takes a lot of time, there is potential for streaks and smudges and you have to be REALLY careful with this… so I sadly have to give this polish a 4 out of 10 *sad face*

I really want to know if ?I was the only one who had this particular issue with this polish? Is it possible that I simply got hold of a bad bottle? Hopefully next  week’s pick will give me something fantastic… this was really a downer.

Until Next Time…

J Nail Lacquer in Teal Green

When I grabbed the nail polish I was confused because I had no clue where I got it from, usually can look at a polish and remember where I got this from…not this one. So I looked it up because I have never heard of this particular polish before….and there is not a 20140308_222021lot of information, one thing that popped up was the Rockey Trading Company…. apparently they sell this brand of nail polish in bulk so I’m thinking where ever I got this polish originally got it from there….. so the mystery continues….

I love a teal green, I guess that’s why I have so many of them in collection, but when no prior experience with this brand I forged ahead with a base coat and a idea of what I 20140308_221904wanted my nails to look like. The first layer had me seriously worried because it was so thin and the whole time I was thinking, “this is gonna be a mess” so I took the slow and steady approach and allowed the layer to dry for 30 minutes before apply the second layer; which turned out great… the color was nice and rich and exactly as it appears in the bottle.

Since I was feeling a little funky I decided to do a little cute nail art on all of the fingers… man those lines were a pain… and not all of them were straight, but no one is looking at my nails that closely but me. Then I topped it off with  Salon Perfect’s Matte FX (topcoat) . I was really happy with the look… Now this is the second time that I have used this particular top coat and the first time left my nail polish uber brittle and it started cracking and fell off, well you know I’m hard-headed and I tried again… and guess what I woke up with a little surprise (did I mention that I did my nails before bed?) , I’m not sure exactly what type of gymnastics that I do when I’m sleeping but I shouldn’t wake up 7 hours later with chips in my nail polish. Simply unacceptable… now I’m not gonna place the blame on J Lacquer… nope this is all Salon Perfect’s fault!!

20140309_114808

Now on to a a score, although this polish seem to come out of nowhere, the application was great, and I honestly think I would have gotten a nice wear out of this polish had a chosen a better topcoat… so J Lacquer get’s a

7 out of 10

I hope everyone had a better experience with their polish than I had this week..

Until Next Time….
