Tyra Takes On…Ramen

So every Saturday until my Ramen supply is gone I will be reviewing them… all these Brands and types  are new to me and were supplied in my monthly Snack Fever Box (referral link) and I just never got to them, then one day I realized I had all this ramen and wasn’t eating it.

Now let me give you a little history on my Ramen experience, I ate it a lot of college and grad school… hell I practically survived on it… it was cheap and easy to make, and during grad school there were always a few brick in my desk for those vEoSG77times when money was a little lean (usually right before payday) or when I had students in my office that were missing lunch I could offer it to them. I will say that I felt like I had grown up a little bit moving past the bricks on to the cup o soups (they had veggies in them…. clearly that’s a sign of maturing adulthood). And even today I have 2 bricks of Marchan in my pantry…

This week I quickly grabbed one without looking at it to much, naturally as luck would have it I grabbed a spicy one…. so like the wimp I am I sat it down and said I would eat it tomorrow…. two days later, I bit the bullet and finally tried it.

paldo-kokomen-ramen

Which brings us to our first Ramen that Tyra Takes On …Paldo’s Kokomen (Available online via Amazon.com)

Usually New Ramen comes out from existing similar types. For instance, Jjajang, Jjambbong, Yuk-gye-jang, Cold Noodle, Kissmyon, Nagasaki Jjambbong Etc. But, Kokomen is very unique and prototype of all recipes. Kokomen was introduced through a Cooking Contest and food critics and people were amazed by the taste of it. Paldo took this recipe and developed to a total brand new product to our consumers. – The Ramen Rater

I should probably add right off the bat that I ate this ramen for breakfast…which is a first for me … EVER!! Not even during college or grad school. But no worries to make this meal even more 20160422_080825_resizedodd I made sure to have a vegetable, so I grabbed the first frozen bag or vegetables (okra) cooked some and ate that while the ramen was cooking.

So let’s get to it. … The Paldo website  they list this particular ramen as a “ Delicatessen Noodle” along with their Cheese ramen (sounds yummy) and their Green Tea Cholrella Ramen (YUCK!). So naturally I looked it up,and I think it has something to do with the fact that it’s Chicken Noodle Soup flavored, and you always seem to find the best CNS in deli….. at least I think that’s why it’s a delicatessen noodle…. correct me if I’m wrong.

The package doesn’t have any big surprises inside; there is a very typical block of round-style Korean ramen noodles, and the standard two packets of add-ins (one powder, one veggie flake).  Interestingly, though, the ingredients list for the vegetable packet includes chicken breast and egg flakes….I searched and searched and  wasn’t able to recognize any of those ingredients. (Actually as I look through the pictures I can see them a little bit more clearly) I although I do see some tiny yellow rectangles that are probably the eggs, and I noticed something that looked like sliced peppers, but I was hungry and I didn’t want to inspect. Nothing really out of the usual, but the thing that really caught my attention was the amount of broth powder, honestly I think that’s the most I have ever seen from Ramen and the smell, it was really “flavorful” and I got scared again because I could smell the spiciness….

ramen 2

The broth has a really nice flavor; the “Clean Spicy” descriptor from the package is actually a really good description.  It is a very clean, almost western-style chicken broth, accented by a very fresh-tasting pepper flavor–more than just the heat, you can taste the green accents, it reminds me of the flavor of fresh jalapeño.  While the heat level is assertive, it is definitely not overpowering, and interestingly, the heat doesn’t seem to ‘build’ as I eat more of it. he noodles are nice and thick standard ramyun with a bit of chew and in a quantity that provides more than a snack. They also do a great job of absorbing some of the broth.

As you can see in the picture I ate this ramen with no “extras” and it was great. This is a good ramen to eat when you’re not feeling good, it has all the great things that you love in your classic chicken noodle soup (with a hint of spice) .It scared me at first, but the light taste and non lingering spiciness proved to me a winner…. this one gets a 4.5 stars out of 5.

And because  it was so much fun the last time…

Tyra Takes On… Ramen

Ramen

While I’m taking an exotic journey to the wilds of Milwaukee, I thought that today would be an excellent opportunity to begin my new series. I should probably be honest that this was going to be “Ramen Fest” where I ate a different type of Ramen everyday for a week or so, but then I started to look up the sodium content (NOPE, not good, especially with a girl who is already on a water pill because I have a tendency to swell up like a hot air balloon) and the Weight Watchers Smart points on them make me cry and I honestly couldn’t justify  eating all those points in a day.vEoSG77

So every Saturday until my Ramen supply is gone I will be reviewing them… all these Brands and types or Ramen are new to me and were supplied in my monthly Snack Fever Box (referral link) and I just never got to them, then one day I realized I had all this ramen and wasn’t eating it.

I will say that I felt like I had grown up a little bit moving past the bricks on to the cup o soups (they had veggies in them…. clearly that’s a sign of maturing adulthood). And even today I have 2 bricks of Marchan in my pantry…

Now every one had their own way of eating and preparing Ramen, but I was told recently by  Korean friend that I was eating it wrong…so like the dork I am I did a little research and went looking into Ramen, Goodness! who knew there were so many…

Which brings us to our first Ramen that Tyra Takes On …Samyang U-dong20160331_130615_resized

Samyang make an Udon flavored instant noodle called Pojangmacha. The packaging of these noodles closely resembles the Pojangmacha packaging and these appear to be a rebranded version of those noodles. I suspect that the Pojangmacha brand is sold within Korea where the customers would be familiar with the term meaning a street vendor. Outside of Korea, most people would be unfamiliar with the term and it would simply be sold as U-Dong Flavor Noodle.” – Journey into the World of Ramen

SNSD and Ramen… WIN!!

I was instantly confused because isn’t it supposed to be Udon not U-dong… but whatever… I’m bout to eat this !! Just as soon as I take pictures and eat it.

So here we have a close up of the soup base, the Ramen it’s self…. sorry Udon noodles and the extra bits (are those dehydrated veggies, herbs? I couldn’t tell. Seems harmless enough, I mean really what can go wrong? It’s Ramen…. well Udon.

ingrediants

cooking the Ramen was no problem , seems to be pretty standard. The one thing that I did notice was that the broth was very light…. and no it wasn’t user error I actually measured the water correctly…. so I should first say that not only do these noodles expand they seems to double in size….and when I was plating my very first thought was, “crap. I’m not gonna be able to finish this all)

But as you know I’m not a quitter and I fixed up my bowl of soup. and this is where I would chow down, then I remember my friend telling me how I eat Ramen wrong…. apparetnyl I don’t add nifty stuff like eggs or paste or whatever…. I consider myself a ramen purist. I eat the Ramen and I eat the brother and that it..

But for the purpose of this taste test and overall ramen beatification I added a hard boiled egg, some leftover ham (from Easter) and some Seaweed (which tanks to Costco is always present in my home)

20160331_132753_resized

Maybe the ham wasn’t a good idea…but it looks pretty

The noodles were thick and chewy, and honestly I would have eaten them without the broth.  They are kinda plain, but I think that’s why I like Udon noodles so much, there’’s so much you ca do with them flavor wiseSo the broth was supposed to be seafood flavor and now thinking back on it…adding the ham night have been  not the best idea… but apparently while cooking I totally missed the seafood flavor on the packaging…. And to be honest I found myself wondering if this is what seafood taste like, because I didn’t instantly “feel” seafood…. and overall the seafood taste was “meh” But I ate it, and finished it…. FOR SCIENCE!!

Peep me with my horrible chopstick skills

Now reading up on this product I found that they have removed the dried Laver that was originally included in the package (like that matters, I totally added my own) and this product no longer contains MSG

Capture

This song is a gem…..

Honestly his one was hard to rate because it was the first one. but if I compared it to what I’m used to eating I would give it a solid 3 stars only because I didn’t find the broth flavor that appealing or strong. In my opinion the noodles saved this Ramen.

What I Ate Wednesday: Oh My GERD

WIAW_thumb[2]

So clearly this is not an original thought WIAW was originated from Peas and Crayons  and a lot of other bloggers have started doing it as well; and since I can’t be original and I really like the idea of doing this… I decided to give it whirl as well. This will pretty much be a mish-mash of stuff,  some days I will try a new technique or perhaps I’ll be eating something for the first time as is the case today… and someday it might be leftover chili…who knows, and I guess that’s part of the fun. When I first started blogging it was to remain accountable with my exercise and food intake, so this is kind of takes me back… Very little of this is planned… but it’s 100% honest…I always want WIAW to be an accurate account of what I am eating. Not everyday I eat completely healthy, but more often than not I make healthy choices.

As always my Weight Watchers Points into the fold.

WIAWBreakfast

I had a Banana for breakfast, I ate it slow hoping that it wouldn’t make me sick to my stomach…. WRONG!!

WIAWLunch

I had applesauce, just because it was lunch time and I figured it was a good idea to eat something before I left to go to my doctors appointment.

WIAWDinner

Now for the past few days I’ve noticed that I actually start to feel a slight tingling of hunger, so I try to have some protein. Since it’s game night and I’m not at home I usually pack my dinner and take it to my cousin’s house, so I made a quick salad and NuWave’d a pork chop added an hard boiled egg…. instant salad. I fared pretty well with Dinner, I was proud that it didn’t hurt me, and I was proud that I ate it all..and enjoyed it!

Collagedinner

So my total Smart Point Consumption for the day was a measly 4

WIAWCalories

My calories, much like my points is woofully low, and not my usual.. I’m hoping next week will be better,

WIAWWater

Even though I’m not hungry, I am beyond thirsty, I’m still drinking the majority of my water at night….and I’ll drink around 32 ounces during the time I’m sleeping. I actually wake up to drink water….. not sure what’s going there

What I Ate Wednesday: I Had a Few Indulgences

WIAW_thumb[2]

So clearly this is not an original thought WIAW was originated from Peas and Crayons  and a lot of other bloggers have started doing it as well; and since I can’t be original and I really like the idea of doing this… I decided to give it whirl as well. WIAWBreakfast

Collagebreak

I knew that today was going to be a busy day so I got all my favorites together and made a scramble” filled with protein from the egg whites and the lean ham. Every thing was measured before it was cooked and I was surprised by how much there was. The point was to fill up on breakfast and so that I wouldn’t over indulge since I knew that I was going out for lunch. 3 Smart Points and all that food, Seriously I think I did pretty good..

WIAWLunch

CollagelunchSee the thing is I have a problem, a serious problem and it’s called macaroni and cheese, and I have said this many times, to many people but I don’t think there is a such thing as bad macaroni… it doesn’t exist, and so I eat it despite the fact that I know it’s going to be a crap ton of points (which is why I don’t eat it that often, but when I do I enjoy it…. And since I knew a lot of my points were going to be devoted to the Mac and Cheese I pilled on the veggies, and had a 0 point salad, and since I didn’t want to add a lot of points with the dressing I added about 1/4 cup of cottage cheese. Then I saw they had collard greens too…. those weren’t so great but I ate them anyway. Plus there was a diet coke thrown in there for shits and giggles.. Total Damage: 11 Smart Points.

WIAWDinner

I was supposed to be done with food for the day… but someone went out and go chicken, then I decided that I wanted a sundae….. this didn’t end well, but in all honesty I was hungry…. and I guess if I needed to I go delve into those “Anytime Points” And as you can tell these are stock photos…. well that’s because I totally forgot to take pictures, I was busy feeding my face. Damage: 24 Smart Points (and totally not worth it)

Collagedinner

So totally Points consumed today: 38. Which means I deducted 4 points from my Anytime Points “bank”

WIAWCalories

I think the only thing that saved me today was that I was fairly active, I did a lot of walking over 10,000 steps, and I spent a lot of time that morning cleaning my house, laundry, mopping, sweeping… hell I did it all…. but my general coloric intake these days are around 13,000 calories, so overall I didn’t do too bad, and this is not a typical day for me food wise, so indulging once in a while is okay.

Capture

WIAWWater

I had a lot of salty food today, and for some reason I drink the majority of my water in the evenings…

What I Ate Wednesday: I Didn’t Actually Cook Anything

WIAW_thumb[2]

WIAWBreakfast

Lately it seems that I have a piece of fruit before I workout and have a “smoothie” when I return, those Weight Watchers Smoothies are really feeling and they don’t taste bad.. Breakfast was 2 points

WIAWSnack

I was craving coffee bad, It was one of those days when you realize you were super busy and time went by faster than you expected and you actually missed lunch….. those are pretty rare for me, my stomach will always let me know when it’s time for food….So I just had a small coffee and a yogurt. My Snack was 3 Points

20150915_081006

WIAWDinner

Subway has really become my “go-to” meal when I don’t want to cook or when I want “fast food” it doesn’t hurt that it’s right around the corner. So I had a six inch steal and cheese (yes I actually but cheese on my sandwich… but can you have a steak sammich without cheese? It just seems wrong), Baked Lays and a Diet Coke. Dinner was 14 points

20150915_145232

Clearly you can tell that I didn’t have anything fancy today, but I will give myself extra points for not cooking a darn thing!

WIAWCalories

My general caloric intake is 1200 calories per day, and today I went  ate 854 calories, MyFitness Pal, actually gave me a “warning” telling me I wasn’t eating enough….. one day isn’t gonna hurt me.

I have 34 points  a day that I can consume, I ate 19 Points and had 15 left over (today was a fluke and it will never happen again)123

WIAWWater

The rule of thumb is that you are supposed to drink at least 8 and today I was able to get 8 cups, and lately that has been difficult for me to get in.
