Writing Prompt: You’re asked to recite a poem (or song lyrics) from memory — what’s the first one that comes to mind? Does it have a special meaning, or is there another reason it has stayed, intact, in your mind?
“I hear Brenda’s got a baby
But Brenda’s barely got a brain
A damn shame, the girl can hardly spell her name
That’s not our problem, that’s up to Brenda’s family
Well let me show you how it affects our whole community
Now Brenda never really knew her moms
And her dad was a junkie putting death into his arms
It’s sad, cause I bet Brenda doesn’t even know
Just cause you’re in the ghetto doesn’t mean you can’t grow”
I remember when this song came out, it was played on The Box all the time. It really was one of those songs that you could never get away from, and honestly it wasn’t a song that I enjoyed but I couldn’t deny that the message was real and the video reflected it… (as far as I’m concerned that song is still as relevant now as when it debuted). Generally when I hear a song it’s either the beat or the catchy hook that sinks me in… and after a while you learn all the lyrics and you finally get and understand what the song was really about, I didn’t get that chance to do that with this song because it was bam right in your face… One day after 4 years ago I was laying in bed and just started singing the song…I knew every single word… which shocked the hell out of my because I didn’t know I knew it (isn’t it odd how the brain works sometimes?)… And now it’s become a permanent earwig… so if ever called upon I can always recite this song… or “Hot in Herre” by Nelly, and I think we can all agree this one might be a little bit better.
Until Next Time….
