The Name’s The Thing

index

Have you ever named an inanimate object? (Your car? Your laptop? The volleyball that kept you company while you were stranded in the ocean?) Share the story of at least one object with which you’re on a first-name basis.

First off if anyone says no then they are a liar… A LAIR… People name their cars all the time… by the way her name is Mary.

I’m all about alteration… for example, My first Kindle was named Kellan (after Kellan Lutz), my Lap is named Lydia… my new Kindle Fire has an odd name, “This Kindle is On Fire” (and every time I see it I’m singing Alisha Keys….) But I can go one further. For people who follow this blog know that I have had my fair share of health issues: Multiple Myeloma and two liver transplants… why did I bring that up, because I have even names my livers. It’s not uncommon for transplanted patients to do that. I did it as a way to honor my donors… but how they I came up with the names are super odd.

In 1999 I got my first liver transplant after being on the list for about a year. And I remember waking up and asking my mother, “How’s Mary?” . The movie , “There’s Something About Mary” was a favorite in our household… but I woke up and knew… I just knew that I had received a liver from a woman…. so Mary was her name. The second time around in 2008 was a bit more dramatic and a lot more scarier, after I woke up from my medically induced coma and was finally able to speak I distinctly remember telling my mother, that this liver felt strange, it felt like it was too small…. and a few days later I got my period (which I hadn’t had in over a year)… it was then that I knew I was walking around with a man’s liver. His name didn’t come instantly like Mary’s did it wasn’t until I was home and starting to feel normal that I started eating foods I absolutely refused to eat even when I was healthy. I couldn’t get enough of pork chops… I wanted to eat them all them time, and the worst part was I was drinking root beer… ROOT BEER!! What the Hell was happening.  Later I had “visions” of this big burly man who liked to hunt with reddish-brown hair…it was after that that I named my current liver Rusty.

It’s so weird that my family actually ask me, “How’s Rusty” and the answer is always the same, Rusty is doing fantastic! My liver has his own personality, separate from my own… so now when I have a root beer, I’m not grossed out, I actually enjoy them and in my own way I honor Rusty and Mary…. because there the reason why I’m here. And for you keen eyed readers I named my car Mary as well… I don’t know why…it just happened that way.

Until Next Time….

  1. Tyra, Firstly, you are fabulous! You made me chuckle when it hurts, so A+++. To quote that old song, “You made me love you, I didn’t want to do it.”
Your story about how each of your livers effected your body was captivating. Root beer and pork chops? Oh yes, that’s a man for you!
I look forward to hear more of your humor and how your liver is treating you. You have such an interesting and engaging perspective on your health. And as a BRAND spanking new blogger (just this week), it warmed my heart to see that you reblogged me ❤ ❤ ❤ xxx

    • As a fellow spoonie I felt compelled to reblog your post…it was really wonderful.
      And congratulations on your blog!!!
As for you joining the “Cult of Tyra”…I couldn’t be more thrilled. I generally don’t write for the masses I write for myself, so when someone writes to me and tells me that they enjoy i something that I wrote it really means a lot. That particular blog started off about me naming my car, and it wasn’t until halfway through that I realized that duh! I’ve named to my livers… and I tend to write like I talk… I go off on tangents, will talk about stuff that has no relevnacy to the original topic and I do curse. Finally someone who get’s and enjoys my personal brand of snark! Thank your again for the reblog and your comments
