I Am Racist, and So Are You.

Very interesting read… what are your thoughts?

Being Shadoan

And the sooner we both acknowledge this, the sooner we can begin to address the problem. So let’s talk.

“Wait just a minute here, Rachel. You’re like, the least racist person I know. You’re always sharing stuff about race and racism. You couldn’t possibly be racist.”

Here’s the deal. Racism isn’t just guys in white robes and Paula Deen shouting racial slurs. Racism is subtle, racism is insidious, and our culture is so deeply steeped in it that it’s impossible to grow up in the US and not be racist. It’s a kind of brainwashing: a set of default configuration files that come with the culture. It’s a filter, built up from birth, that alters our perception of the world. (Literally–racial bias makes people see weapons that aren’t there.) Racism isn’t just conscious actions; it’s judgements that happen so fast that we may not even be aware of…

1. If you were given $10,000 and told you could donate it to a single charity of your choosing, what charity would you choose?

5,000 would go to the American Live Foundation and the other half would be donated Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. But damn it… I just realized that I don’t have an imaginary money left…. screw it I’m gonna pretend that said 15,000..  because 5,000 would defiantly go to Hyde Park Cats; which is a wonderful organization that rescues cats, places them into foster homes, provides medical care and find forever homes for cats. I found my baby Tsuki there…and if you can’t tell she’s quite the diva

2. If you were given $10,000 to spend on yourself (not to treat others or give away), what would you buy?.

I would pay off some bills and then I would use the money for an apartment and new furniture. I know it’s so boring,… but it’s my imaginary 10,000 and ….I can spend it the way that I want to

3. Toilet paper (or loo roll as we say in England) do you have it hanging over or under on the roll?

I think it’s currently under and honestly I don’t care… if it wipes then I’m using it…. it only becomes a problem unless I’m sitting and there is only 2 squares left on the roll, or God forbid there is no tissue left on the roll at all.

4. When you drink your water do you like it plain or with a slice of fruit?

I’m at home so I can’t stand to be fancy. I save my fanciness when I go out to restaurants…. then I request lemon with my water..

5. Are you left handed, right handed or ambidextrous?

Right handed, and this might come as a surprise I hate ambidextrous people…. those amazing freaks! (I’m kidding)

6. Thinking of the amazing Robin Williams who passed away this week :( What is your favorite Robin Williams movie?

First of all I was incredibly sad to hear about his passing. Depression is a major issue; one that I’ve dealt with in the pass, so that someone was suffering to the point where they felt like killing themselves was the only option left. Personally I have lost two people to suicide and a family member recently tried to kill himself, so I always am left feeling with an heavy burden and deep sadness when I hear something like that. Depression can happen to anyone, and more often than not we know someone who suffers from depression. I would encourage everyone to educate themselves….

But back to the subject at hand my favorite Robin Williams movie (and it’s somewhat ironic considering the subject matter) The plot centers on Chris, a man who dies then goes to Heaven, but descends into Hell to rescue his wife who commits suicide. The movie is based on the book by Richard Matheson. Robin Williams will always be known as a comic genius, but I will always think that he shines in his dramatic roles.

7. Do you prefer cow’s milk or a different kind of milk?

I stop drinking cow’s milk years ago due to lactose intolerance… I was drinking soy for a long time, but my doctor recommended I stop drinking it do to medication I was taking… now I’m drinking Almond milk… and to be honest I love it more that I did Soy and Cow’s milk….guess it almond doesn’t work out for m I’ll be drinking coconut milk.

8. Do you prefer to read an actual book or on an electronic device?

I feel so bad that I’m saying that. but I use my Kindle more for games then reading, but at this point it’s more half and half… I do find it super handy  because it’s so light weight… I just started rewatching Lost and my kindle is useless. I defiantly need to read the book when I need to refer to something… and this book is a behemoth.

9. Oatmeal – hot or cold?

Hot, like Sarah said you can make overnight oats, but I just assumed that you had to reheat them. I am making myself love oatmeal… I don’t think I could eat it cold… oatmeal has this tendencies of becoming brick like, and I don’t have the time, patience, or mental fortitude to deal with cold , brick-like oatmeal

10. Pies – sweet or savory?

I will eat a pie…. a meat pie, a fruit, pie, a custard pie… I will eat it. I do not discriminate when it comes to pie….

Until Next Time….

The Name’s The Thing

Have you ever named an inanimate object? (Your car? Your laptop? The volleyball that kept you company while you were stranded in the ocean?) Share the story of at least one object with which you’re on a first-name basis.

First off if anyone says no then they are a liar… A LAIR… People name their cars all the time… by the way her name is Mary.

I’m all about alteration… for example, My first Kindle was named Kellan (after Kellan Lutz), my Lap is named Lydia… my new Kindle Fire has an odd name, “This Kindle is On Fire” (and every time I see it I’m singing Alisha Keys….) But I can go one further. For people who follow this blog know that I have had my fair share of health issues: Multiple Myeloma and two liver transplants… why did I bring that up, because I have even names my livers. It’s not uncommon for transplanted patients to do that. I did it as a way to honor my donors… but how they I came up with the names are super odd.

In 1999 I got my first liver transplant after being on the list for about a year. And I remember waking up and asking my mother, “How’s Mary?” . The movie , “There’s Something About Mary” was a favorite in our household… but I woke up and knew… I just knew that I had received a liver from a woman…. so Mary was her name. The second time around in 2008 was a bit more dramatic and a lot more scarier, after I woke up from my medically induced coma and was finally able to speak I distinctly remember telling my mother, that this liver felt strange, it felt like it was too small…. and a few days later I got my period (which I hadn’t had in over a year)… it was then that I knew I was walking around with a man’s liver. His name didn’t come instantly like Mary’s did it wasn’t until I was home and starting to feel normal that I started eating foods I absolutely refused to eat even when I was healthy. I couldn’t get enough of pork chops… I wanted to eat them all them time, and the worst part was I was drinking root beer… ROOT BEER!! What the Hell was happening.  Later I had “visions” of this big burly man who liked to hunt with reddish-brown hair…it was after that that I named my current liver Rusty.

It’s so weird that my family actually ask me, “How’s Rusty” and the answer is always the same, Rusty is doing fantastic! My liver has his own personality, separate from my own… so now when I have a root beer, I’m not grossed out, I actually enjoy them and in my own way I honor Rusty and Mary…. because there the reason why I’m here. And for you keen eyed readers I named my car Mary as well… I don’t know why…it just happened that way.

Until Next Time….
