Think Again

Writing Prompt: Tell us about a time you made a false assumption about a person or a place — how did they prove you wrong?

I’ll be honest, everyone has heard of Las Vegas and everyone knows the slogan, “What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas”…. well except for Prince Harry… cause everyone knew about that instantly. Like most people my age I had a preconceived notion of what Las Vegas was like. I had decided to purse my education beyond my Bachelor’s Degree and I hadn’t really traveled anywhere, that didn’t include a road trip with my family; and I was seriously starting to feel like, “If I don’t leave now, I will never leave” So I applied to three graduate schools (applications are expensive). University of Michigan, Marquette University (right in my back yard… heck my mother even worked there… this was my “we’ll if I have no where else to go choice”) and University of Nevada – Las Vegas.

Marquette denied me… fuckers! And now I was crewed, because it was all or nothing, I got a yes, from UNLV as well as a graduate assistantship, so I picked my crap and flew to Vegas. It was not what I expected… and yes there were shows and casinos and lots of other things, but I can literally count on my hands the number of times when I went on the strip while I was at school. Las Vegas has so much more to offer than just casino’s, I became aquatinted with the Public Lands, Lake Mead where I worked on a fantastic houseboat and taught schools children about the environment and ecology, and Red Rock Canyon where I volunteered and hiked for the very first time, (I also taught a couple of classes and worked for the city… I hand my fingers in a lot of little pots) I did things that I wouldn’t have never dared myself to do, and incidentally I never once hit the jackpot or married a stranger I met on the strip.

In the three years that I was there, I really grew up and came into my own. And I will never regret making the decision to move there.…oh and I did get in to Michigan, and I seriously thought about it… but another rough mid-western winter was just not something I was willing to endure.Everyone has false assumptions about people or places, but sometimes you have to step out side the box and look a little deeper, more than likely you’ll be happy you did…

Until Next Time…. Find a little inspiration in your life
